today is a google holiday, hooray!

    

Today’s Google Holiday: 2010 FIFA World Cup. As you no doubt have noticed, there’s been a pretty popular soccer tournament going on for the past few weeks. Today was the final, which I faithfully watched (read: pretended to watch while I read a book and took mini naps). I decided I was rooting for the Netherlands, because they wear orange, and because they seemed a little more like the underdogs. Unfortunately, my arbitrarily-chosen team lost 1-0 in overtime. I’m clearly devastated, and I’d like to make it known that I’m happy to comfort the Netherlands’ goalie in any way he sees fit:   

    

UPDATE:  So Iker Casillas, Spain’s goalie, didn’t seem as attractive to me during the game (though he did earn major points for being all weepy after they won. Oh, SPORTS). Turns out I might have jumped the gun. I think I like him better now, based on this adorable video embedded in a Gawker post. In the video, he gets emotional and then kisses his girlfriend who happens to be the reporter interviewing him. Um, hi. Perfect.

What I was Googling: josh ritter. Phenomenal singer/songwriter. I’ve known a few of his songs for a while now, but I’m starting to get more into him courtesy of Heather Browne over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends. It’s my new favorite source for all things music, and this interview made me love both Josh and Heather even more. Take a listen to Josh’s “Good Man”:

attention readership: it’s free slurpee day!

Huzzah! Time to head over to the nearest 7-Eleven and get your free Slurpee– perhaps it will help you fight the heat. And if you live in DC with only one AC unit in your apartment, like yours truly, you need it.

lohan claims a human rights violation.

Oh, LiLo. A few people have passed this my way already this morning. Lindsay is now saying the “f*** u” written on her fingernail was a just a joke, and it had nothing to do with her court appearance. It is almost unbelievable, at this point, that she isn’t smart enough to realize that she is under a microscope and something like that would be seen. Anyway, the Lohan believes all of this criticism is unfair, and that she has been subjected to cruelty, so she took to her Twitter account to clear things up.

She essentially claimed that her human rights had been violated, and tweeted Article 5 of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Yes, really.

No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

And then she quotes law professor Erik Luna:

“November 1 marked the 15th anniversary of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. But there were no celebrations, parades, or other festivities in honor of this punishment scheme created by Congress and the U.S. Sentencing Commission… Instead, the day passed like most others during the last 15 years: Scores of federal defendants sentenced under a constitutionally perverted system that saps moral judgment through its mechanical rules.”

Well, we all know she’s wrong. And I have a smarty-pants friend that made logical points to counter Lindsay’s rambling:

a.  She’s referring to the wrong body of law- this is a GA assembly resolution- the universal declaration of human rights is not binding to the US.
b. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is binding to the US.
c. Our own constitution protects against cruel and unusual punishment.

Celebrities! Who would we mock without them?

After that, she posted a link to the Newsweek story on Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman who will be stoned to death for adultery. Let’s all hope she isn’t comparing her situation to that human rights tragedy.

But in all honesty, I find it sad that LiLo’s delusional enough to think that she doesn’t deserve to abide by the court’s rules like the rest of us. Maybe this whole experience will do the girl some good. (But that’s been said before, right?)

edith shain, the kissing nurse, dies.

Edith Shain, now famous for being the subject of “one of the most memorable photographs from World War Two,” died on Sunday at 91. You know the photo, right?:

Now I’ve seen this photo about a million times — and was among the 50% of college girls who had this poster up in her dorm room (there was a poster sale on campus, OKAY?) — but I never knew the story behind it. As I went to post this, I wondered if she ended up marrying that guy, or something equally adorable. Turns out, she didn’t even know him. According to le Wikipedia, “In August 1945, Shain was working at Doctor’s Hospital in New York City as a nurse when she and a friend heard on the radio that World War II had ended. They went to Times Square where all the celebrating was and as soon as she arrived on the street from the subway, the sailor grabbed her in an embrace and kissed her.” As one Gawker commenter pointed out, that almost makes the story more amazing; there Edith was, minding her own business, when all of a sudden she becomes part of this iconic moment, captured forever on film.

Rest in peace, Edith, and thanks for being such a good sport. Next time a stranger tries to give me a smooch on the sidewalk, I’ll go with it, and hope someone’s around to snap the picture.

today is a google holiday, hooray!

Today’s Google Holiday: First Day of Summer! Heck yes! (Although based on the amount that I was sweating yesterday while indoors, it’s been summer here in The Swamp for a while now.)

What I was Googling: soldiers’ angels. My roommate recently signed up for this program, through which you can write soldiers letters, send them care packages, etc. It sounds like an awesome idea, and what I like best is that you are connected with an individual soldier (rather than writing a generic letter to an unknown person). Take a look, if you’re interested!

Enjoy the first day of summer, everyone! I feel like I should go get a Slurpee and watch The Price is Right after swim practice, a la 1995.

today is a google holiday, hooray!

Today’s Google Holiday: Happy 100th Birthday Jacques Cousteau! Now, does it count as a birthday if the person is dead? I’m not sure I can support the phrasing of this holiday. They should have titled it, “It Would Have Been Cool If You Were Still Alive, Jacques, Because Then You Would Have Been 1oo!” Then again, if I had worked for Google, yesterday’s National Iced Tea Day and the second anniversary of this here bloggie (!!!) on June 9 would have been featured. They’ll get their priorities straight eventually. Jacques might have done cool stuff in the ocean, but Kathleen and I post funny videos that other people made. I really don’t understand the difference.

What I was Googling: Nothing, actually. (I considered making something up that was kind of awkward/funny, like maybe “the electric slide,” but that would have been dishonest.) I was actually on Google to see if yesterday’s picture party was still going on. Did anyone else see that? Instead of being white, the Google homepage background was a fabulous picture that changed every so often. I think they were advertising a new feature where you can pick any photo you want and have it be your background. I grabbed a screen shot of this baby:
