and the best beard goes to…

The Oscars were on last night. Blah blah, Colin Firth is my soulmate, James Franco was probably stoned, Melissa Leo said “fuck,” etc. Can we talk about the two epic beards of the night? I obviously couldn’t pick just one.

First, I have to give some love and recognition to my boyfriend, Jeff Bridges:

I understand that his beard is not exactly new (which I just spelled “knew” on the first try…embarrassing), but I still love it lots. Also, I wish he could narrate my life.

And then holy Christian Bale beard! Some darkness on the top, a whole lot of ginger on the face…and while I know that many of you (Kelsey) will disagree, I think he kind of rocks it:

I’d also like to take this opportunity to mention that not a single person I was watching with knew that Christian Bale was Welsh. We thought he was faking his accent when he first started talking. And then he cried about his wife. SWOON.

Kathleen and I have a lot to tell you (hint: we are NOT pregnant…yet), but for now, I have to go eat some microwaveable Indian food.

In the meantime, here’s a throwback link that I found while searching the ol’ bloggy for my Jeff Bridges references. Really, Mal, with the Jamiroquai dream?

my heart’s in the strangest place.

I got to go see The Walkmen on Friday at 9:30 Club, and wow. Just…wow. Their sound is too big for words. I think a lot about what my five songs would be if I was FORCED to only listen to five songs for the rest of my life, and “In the New Year” is almost definitely on my list. I really think I could listen to it forever and still love it. And the live version blew my mind. (Eloquent, I know — I’m quitting my job to write for Rolling Stone.) Listen:

DCist did a pretty good review of the show, and they mentioned one of the best moments of the night: when lead singer Hamilton Leithauser shoved a rowdy fan off the stage. It might sound mean, but the kid jumped on stage during the encore, when the rest of us were just all “Let us listen to the pretty, loud music and think about what it all meeeeeans.” The kid deserved that swift push back into the crowd of annoyed indie rockers.

In other news, this show finally convinced me that I need to start wearing ear plugs to concerts if I want to be able to hear when I’m 26. The tall scruffy kid in front of me had them, and that means it’s totally legit.

today is a google holiday, hooray!

Today’s Google Holiday: 2010 FIFA World Cup. As you no doubt have noticed, there’s been a pretty popular soccer tournament going on for the past few weeks. Today was the final, which I faithfully watched (read: pretended to watch while I read a book and took mini naps). I decided I was rooting for the Netherlands, because they wear orange, and because they seemed a little more like the underdogs. Unfortunately, my arbitrarily-chosen team lost 1-0 in overtime. I’m clearly devastated, and I’d like to make it known that I’m happy to comfort the Netherlands’ goalie in any way he sees fit:

UPDATE:  So Iker Casillas, Spain’s goalie, didn’t seem as attractive to me during the game (though he did earn major points for being all weepy after they won. Oh, SPORTS). Turns out I might have jumped the gun. I think I like him better now, based on this adorable video embedded in a Gawker post. In the video, he gets emotional and then kisses his girlfriend who happens to be the reporter interviewing him. Um, hi. Perfect.

What I was Googling: josh ritter. Phenomenal singer/songwriter. I’ve known a few of his songs for a while now, but I’m starting to get more into him courtesy of Heather Browne over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends. It’s my new favorite source for all things music, and this interview made me love both Josh and Heather even more. Take a listen to Josh’s “Good Man”:

And speaking of Google Holidays, I missed one a few days back:

July 6’s Google Holiday: Frida Khalo’s 103rd Birthday. Again, with the celebrating birthdays of dead people. Stop that, Google.

What I was Googling: rick steves. Love the man.

beards, ben, and levi johnston’s blues.

The Ben Folds and a Piano concert on Friday was awesome, and I have a new crush: his opening act, Zach Williams:

Beard? Check. Flannel? Check. Guitar? Check. Adorable wife and daughter whom he talked about lots? Sigh, check.

Because Mr. Williams is not yet supa-famous, we were able to chat with him after the concert. That gave me the opportunity to say really creepy things like, “There are so many things that are great about you, and one of them is your beard. Never get rid of it.” (Don’t worry, I followed that up by Facebook friending him and sending him a message. Yes, I fully expect him to be celebrating his first Stalker Fan. And yes, I did have too many Dark ‘n’ Stormies at dinner.) Here’s a taste (and I’m not entirely sure why he’s lying on the floor, but hey, art!):

Here’s another one of my favorites. And here’s the one he wrote about his daughter. So effing cute.

Ben Folds, of course, was amazing as well, and ended the show with a phenomenal rendition of “Bitches Ain’t Shit.” But the crowning moment of his set was when he played “Levi Johnston’s Blues.” If you didn’t love ol’ Ben before (ahem, MATT), you will now:

And with that, I bid you good day.

youtube clip of today: a BFD.

Oh FINE.  Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen it (and certainly heard it) by now, but here is everyone’s Uncle Joe dropping the F bomb on live TV.

I think he’s the greatest.  He’s just so lovably inappropriate!  You know he was sitting there thinking to himself, “What powerful words can I say to B that he will remember for the rest of his life?” Well, he certainly found the words to say. Perhaps he just forgot that there were 250 hot mics around.  Regardless, I’m glad it happened, and here’s why: it’s been lightening up the health care debate and people have been having some fun with it.

Yup.  School House Rock got BFD’d.

But back to Biden. As Press Secretary Robert Gibbs tweeted, “And yes, Mr. Vice President, you’re right“. Because he is.  It IS a big deal.  And it’s long overdue.

PS- Here is a great tool to see how the health care legislation will affect you.  Super easy– just put in your marital status, if/how you have health care and what you make.  Click here.

I’m seeing Ben Folds on Friday, and this video made me even more excited for the concert. He BEST do this in DC (and I hope we talk to Bobby again):
