run away fast as you can.

"I win, because I WIN." (Big Daddy? Anyone?)

Okay, so I’m 24 hours late on this — criminal in the world of social media — but can we talk about the VMAs for a second? And can we talk about how fah-reaking awkward Taylor Swift’s performance was? I want so, so badly to be Team Taylor. (After all, last year at this time I proclaimed myself FIRMLY on her side.) Kanye was a douche last year, no question, and I certainly still can (and often do) belt the lyrics of a Taylor Swift song as loudly and proudly as the average nine year old. But the girl needs to learn how to perform live, and she needs to get over the Kanye thing. If she hadn’t performed that horrible emo ballad that I’ll probably grow to love, she would have come out on top. She’d have been the bigger person. Instead, she gave us all the impression that she spent a year channeling her rage into a single song that she hoped would blow the world away last night. And sadly, it was a huge misfire. No one cared, and then Kanye came onstage and sang an awesomely tongue-in-cheek (I think?) song that I already have stuck in my head. Round two goes to the douchebag.

T.Swift, please pull yourself together. It’s starting to get embarrassing to publicly support you.

there’s no one here to save.

Girl crush number one million. So talented and so delightfully poppy, all at once:

because everyone loves looking at puppies.

First, puppies casually being perfect:

And, second:

Oh, yeah, that’s just an adorable monkey carrying an adorable puppy away from a fire after a pipeline explosion in China. My heart can’t take that shit!

Speaking of shit, the girl next to me at work listens to the radio during the day. When you listen to the radio during the day, you hear some of the same songs over and over, like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” [Ed. Note: really, with the “gurls”? How does that add to the song?]. I have heard “California Gurls” at least four times today, and while I used to enjoy the song for its airy pop wonderfulness, I’m starting to hate it. Four times in eight hours is way too many times. (But ask me again when I’ve been drinking, and dancing.) You really should read this, though.

I’m trying to blog more, kids. I really am! Send me good, motivational vibes. And funny things.

youtube clip of today: girl crush.

EA over at and then its perfect introduced me to the following video, a cover of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness,” and I can’t stop listening to it (and yes, I’m aware that I say that about everything). This girl is amazing, and if anyone ever wanted me to sing in public, I’d totally take shots of tequila on stage too:

Enjoy! And sorry for the lack of substantial posting these days. I have no real excuse, but Kathleen just started what is basically her dream job, so she’s a leetle busy with that.

today is a google holiday, hooray!

Today’s Google Holiday: 2010 FIFA World Cup. As you no doubt have noticed, there’s been a pretty popular soccer tournament going on for the past few weeks. Today was the final, which I faithfully watched (read: pretended to watch while I read a book and took mini naps). I decided I was rooting for the Netherlands, because they wear orange, and because they seemed a little more like the underdogs. Unfortunately, my arbitrarily-chosen team lost 1-0 in overtime. I’m clearly devastated, and I’d like to make it known that I’m happy to comfort the Netherlands’ goalie in any way he sees fit:

UPDATE:  So Iker Casillas, Spain’s goalie, didn’t seem as attractive to me during the game (though he did earn major points for being all weepy after they won. Oh, SPORTS). Turns out I might have jumped the gun. I think I like him better now, based on this adorable video embedded in a Gawker post. In the video, he gets emotional and then kisses his girlfriend who happens to be the reporter interviewing him. Um, hi. Perfect.

What I was Googling: josh ritter. Phenomenal singer/songwriter. I’ve known a few of his songs for a while now, but I’m starting to get more into him courtesy of Heather Browne over at I Am Fuel, You Are Friends. It’s my new favorite source for all things music, and this interview made me love both Josh and Heather even more. Take a listen to Josh’s “Good Man”:

And speaking of Google Holidays, I missed one a few days back:

July 6’s Google Holiday: Frida Khalo’s 103rd Birthday. Again, with the celebrating birthdays of dead people. Stop that, Google.

What I was Googling: rick steves. Love the man.

youtube clip of today: teeth, live.

Yesterday, Lady Gaga performed “Teeth” (among other songs) live on The Today Show. As you might expect, she was phenomenal. I hope she never ever stops performing:

Thanks to E.Lee (of course) for finding this first.

guess what? i’m not a robot.

Kathleen discovered this song the other day and we (along with my work BFF…hi, work BFF!) have been listening nonstop ever since. I’ve decided that this gal is a mix of Regina Spektor, Kate Nash, and Lady Gaga. Lurve her:

This song makes me a little less depressed to be hanging out in National Airport for the next four hours. Why am I stuck in the airport, you ask? Short answer: because I’m an idiot. Basically, I thought, “Hey, even though normally I’m super cautious about getting to the airport extra early, I’ll calm down this time and just give myself a normal amount of time to get there!” BAD IDEA. As a warning to the rest of you: the second you try to “not have OCD,” the Metro will take forever, the airport shuttle won’t come, and you’ll find yourself pleading with two stoic Frontier agents who are all, “Oh, sorry, I understand that you have 25 minutes [Ed. Note: TOTALLY ENOUGH TIME] to run from here and try to get through security, but we’re going to make you wait for another four hours to fly.” And then they shuffle with papers and try to ignore that you’re crying a little too dramatically in front of them.

So, sorry I’m missing most of your bachelorette party, cousin Ashley. Turns out my neuroses are there for a reason, and ignoring them doesn’t work out well. Lesson learned.

UPDATE: Well, this is interesting. Turns out I wrote a very similar post on almost this exact date last year. I’m flying home for the same trip, the same weekend, AND using a flight voucher borrowed from my father again (which he earned on the same trip two years in a row). WEIRDNESS.

lady gaga’s alejandro video. sex. yawn.

Gaga’s new video for “Alejandro” was released today on the Youtubes, and I just had to watch it. (Me and my roomsies are huuuuuuge fans.) From the very start, let me just say that I get a leeeetle irked with musicians who are so popular they think I want to watch a 9+ minute music video of them lip syncing (“Thriller” excluded, obvi.). Before I go on any more, feast your eyes on this!

This is one of those things where you have to sit back and wonder– is she trying to make a social statement or is she desperately trying to remain culturally relevant by being weird?

First scene: a commentary on gays in the military? Also, she looks like Johnny Depp.  Then there is the usual shocking scene that is sure to get every “pro-family” group (hey, did you see THIS?!) denouncing practically everything, where she simulates sex in nude undies! Yawn, Gaga. It’s been done. Cue the religious symbolism montage! A commentary on the oppression of women in the Catholic church, or a “Like a Virgin” rip-off? COME ON. Annnnnnnd then she is a fembot. Normal. That’s happened before, too. To sum up the rest of the video: sex, sex, gay men, sex, allusions to religion, sex, Gaga trying to have sex with gay men, fembot, obligatory rockstar scene with cool side angles and sun glasses, Gaga ooh la la, machine gun boobs, ambiguous social conflict scenes, sex. Oh, and sex!

I think I have some Gaga-trying-to-shock-me fatigue. But that song sure is catchy. ALE-ALE-JANDRO. ALE-ALE-JANDRO.
