CNN wondered, Gawker wondered, and now Six Words wonders: was Barack Obama in the 1993 video for “Whoomp, There It Is?”

Gawker gives a pretty comprehensive pro/con list debating whether our POTUS is a video star:

FOR

  • It really really looks like him!
  • Obama has a well-documented fondness for hip hop. He likes Kanye West and Ludacris.
  • Obama has a history of hip hop cameos. In 2008, reports said he was featured on an upcoming Q-Tip track. Though Q-Tip ended up simply sampling one of his speeches.
  • As one commenter on SomethingAwful noted: The man in the video is playing dominoes with his left hand. BARACK OBAMA IS ALSO LEFT HANDED!
  • The video was released in 1993. Barack would have been around 31 when it was filmed, a year or two out of Harvard Law. Seems like something cool that our coolest, cigarette-smoking, hoops-shooting future president would do as an early 30-something.

AGAINST

  • But, actually, by 1993, Obama was deeply involved in community activism in Chicago. In 1992, Obama famously helped boost voter turnout among blacks through his tireless organizing. How would Obama had the time to film this video? And why the hell would the director of Tag Team’s video seek out a notable community organizer to play a domino player? Maybe they were buddies from Harvard or something.
  • Also, Tag Team is from Atlanta. If Obama wanted to make his rap video debut, wouldn’t he have chosen an early-90s act from his beloved Chicago? Maybe Da Brat, or Crucial Conflict? And he would obviously be wearing a Bulls hat—not a Compton one.
  • Most of these conspiracy theorists base their observation on a low-quality YouTube version of the video. Take a look at this screenshot from a higher-quality video: Doesn’t look much like him, actually. Also: earrings? Obama is cool, but not that cool.

I think I’m going to conclude that it’s him, because that would just be the greatest. But what do you think? Is that our beloved Barry?

i want to be an obama!

Today the White House released the official portrait of the First Family taken by Annie Leibovitz.  My first thoughts were “My GOD what a beautiful family” and “Where should I photoshop myself in?”  Creepy?  Yes.  True?  …Yes.

And First Dog Bo wasn’t left out of the action.  In fact, Bo had his own set of White House portraits done, although Annie Leibovitz didn’t stick around to take those photos.  Malia and Sasha didn’t even get that honor.

some quick thoughts on sonia sotomayor…

sotomayorAlright, I know.  It’s “old news” (old being about two days), but I still wanted to weigh in.

In case you haven’t heard, my boy Barack named Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee to replace David Souter on the Supreme Court.  First things first, how do you say her name?  Mallory tackled that one!  Click here.  And now, my thoughts.

I’ve had a few days to digest this now, and I must admit, I’m a little let down.  I see the pragmatism, but I don’t see the promise of change.  I was really hoping for a strong logical and liberal voice on the court, and it seems that we are getting a left-leaner.  So the court remains 5-4, but barely leaning left.

Her record on choice is thin, and while I’m sure she will uphold Roe v. Wade, I’d like to see someone on the court who has demonstrated more conviction in her career.  Sure, she saved baseball, but what about our reproductive rights?  Hopefully she bats lefty. (GET IT?! HA!)

GOP hip hop gangsta Michael Steele had this to say about her (from CNN’s Political Ticker):

Indeed, Steele was mild in his initial jabs, calling Sotomayor an “interesting pick” with “overwhelming political overtones to it.”

Funny, Michael Steele.  That’s what most people would say about you!  SNAP!  But quite bluntly, B played it safe with this one.  The GOP is searching for something to hold on to that justifies them not voting for confirmation, and the fact that nobody really knows anything about her is making their task more difficult.

From what I’ve read, Sonia Sotomayor is one heck of smart lady.  She has an inspirational story of success (the projects in the Bronx to a SCOTUS nomination) and has an excellent reputation as a judge.  She was first appointed to Federal District Court in New York by George H.W. Bush and the Court of Appeals by Bill Clinton, so she’s had bipartisan support in the past.  Not too shabby.  And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention she’d be the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice!  And just the third woman to ever sit on the bench.

I have no doubt in my mind that she will be a great judge, I was just hoping for a little more, I suppose.  I wanted him to make a statement.  Perhaps that’s for next time.  I trust you, B!

things i should have posted earlier.

Yeah yeah yeah.  I know.  I could have posted it this weekend (or yesterday), but nerd statistics show that nobody reads the blog on the weekend anyway, proving that you all use this while you are being paid by your unsuspecting employers. I love it!

The best joke in here is a little inside, I know!  It’s the one he makes about John Boehner (pronounced like BAINER, not BONER) being a person of color.  John Boehner, the House Minority leader, has skin that particular shade of orange that only comes from fake tanning.  See?

specter sees the light, joins dems.

arlenspectorRepublican Senator Arlen Specter, a well-known moderate, has announced he is joining the Democratic party and he will run as a Democrat in 2010.  This is not a huge surprise.  He has consistently voted with the Democrats since Obama has been elected.  Apparently though, our Veep, Mr. Biden is the one that convinced him.  Way to go, Joe!

Obviously as a Democrat, I am happy that we have one more crucial vote in the Senate.  (Now if they would just get that pesky Minnesota seat settled and swear in Al Franken…)  But let’s look at the larger picture here.

I always like to give credit where credit is due.  I am, after all, a first born child and I LOVE to be recognized when I’m right or when do a good job.  (Do you think they’ll give me gold star stickers for a job well done in the real world?)  The Republican party, over the past ten years, has done a fantastic job at messaging.  Ex- It didn’t matter that he wasn’t smart, America just needed a president you can sit down and have a beer with.  This, of course, turned out to be an EPIC FAIL.  But the American people bought it in 2000 and 2004.  Here’s another good one:  All Democrats are socialists who want to take away your guns and hard earned money, abort your babies and let the terrorists win while turning the US of A into a godless nation.  A slight exaggeration, but I can only hope that you get my point.

But while the GOP was painting moderate Democrats and the actual socialists with the same brush, they neglected the fact that their own party has its moderates.  And maybe, just maybe, the party’s message was excluding them.

It’s weird, but I think Meghan McCain is the most logical spokesperson the GOP has right now.  Naturally, I will disagree with her on some points, but at least she’s says things that make sense.  And if they are looking for the youth vote, I’m pretty sure MM will have a better chance at reaching out to young people then Rush Limbaugh.  Or that wretched Ann Coulter.  Ugh.

I don’t really feel like analyzing how the GOP can fix its problems when I think there are bigger problems to solve… like the economy.  I’ll let you know when I figure that one out.  In the mean time, my trust is in B.

But welcome to the real party, Sen. Specter.  Time to get down to business.  There’s work to be done.

Naturally, I think B looks fantastic.  While the article makes it seem like it wasn’t necessarily a campaign decision to let him go gray, I think it was.  Every detail of that campaign was discussed and analyzed.  They wanted him to have a more experienced look, and it works for him.

Who is this Walt Frazier “No Play for Mr. Gray” joker anyway?  Pssh.  B is still foxy.

oh hi, it’s me. i blog?

I’m back.  I’ve come back from an unsuccessful foray into the real world (read:  no place to live or a job…but I might have found a place to live.  But still no job.  That should be interesting.  That’s another post.) and I’m back to the la la land of blogging where I can do what I love and pretend I’m getting paid!  (Barack, could we speed up that fixing the economy business?  I know it’s not going to happen overnight…but I need it to get better so people want to hire me.)

So. Much. To. Talk. About.  So we have a new president.  AWESOME. (If you don’t want to read one more freaking word about inauguration then just skip to the next paragraph.) Yours truly was there in the throws of things.  I got to spend some quality time with Jessica Alba and her husband, Cash Warren.  Cash, by the way, was much nicer than she was and not nearly as much of a jerk as Perez Hilton makes him out to be.  If I had taken a picture with Jessica, I would have posted it, but I was trying to keep my cool and pretend like I didn’t care that she was a celebrity.  Maybe it worked but it was a HUGE mistake on my part, because now I have no actual evidence.  Whatev.  Barack’s speech was perfect.  It was HOPEy, CHANGEy, alluded to our new style of diplomacy, and presented a strong national image and showed he was not going to mess around.  RAWR.  I made it to a couple balls, but never got to see B and Meesh dance.  Wahhh.  We arrived just as Biden did, so they wouldn’t let us in.  They were going to let us in between Joe and Barack, but guess what.  They didn’t.  I stood in the cold for forty minutes waiting.  You know what made it better though?  Walking in and James Taylor was playing.  Niiiiiiiiiice.  Okay, that’s all I’m going to say about the great inaug.  Nope it’s not.  I would wear everything Michelle Obama wears.  Foxy.  Hell, I’d wear Sasha and Malia’s clothes too.  Too cute.  ENOUGH! ENOUGH.

Barack is going to sign the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act today.  It will now be law that women deserve the same pay as men.  I cannot believe it took this long.  If you want to read the stories that prove we need this legislation, read this NYT op-ed.  Hooray!

In other great news, PETA is still batty.  I meant to blog about them wanting to change the word “fish” to “sea kittens” but I didn’t.  So get over it.  Hopefully, you know about that anyway.  If you don’t, here’s the deal.  Fish have feelings, etc.  So when you eat fish, they want you to feel bad about it.  Like REALLY REALLY bad.  They think the best way to do this is to change the name of fish to sea kittens.  I am not making that up.  But that’s not even what I am talking about.  PETA has a vegetable sex ad that got denied for a Superbowl slot.  Vegetable sex.  Yeah, I said it and yeah, I know you pervs want to watch it:

Wowie.  Thank you, PETA, for grossing me out AND making me feel bad about myself at the same time.  And I’d like to see their sources for their information.  How do they KNOW that vegetarians have better sex?

Okay, I’m off to stalk le internets and find more goodness for you to enjoy while you work.  And I do not work.  Really, this is community service.  Right, Mom and Dad?

oh my lack of blogging, etc.

As you may have noticed, neither Kathleen nor I have blogged in a while. We go through a dry spell every so often, and I always feel incredibly guilty about it the whole time. On that topic, my roommate and I just had the following conversation:

Sarah: Um, Six Words and Drunkinarowboat are totally failing me.

Me: I know…I’m like, really conflicted. Do I even keep blogging? Is it worth it to blog if I’m not being consistent or doing a good job?

Sarah: [incredulous stare]

What she means is, she needs the distraction. She also means that blogging sometimes is better than never blogging again, if I really like doing this. And I do. Minus the fact that our blog is looking totally janky right now and I don’t know what to do about it because technology hurts my brain. 

So I’m gonna keep on keepin’ on, and keep doing the best I can to blog regularly. (Kathleen will too; I’m making her promise that without her consent.)

t minus two days until history.

I should be out celebrating the four-day weekend and impending inauguration of my dear Barry with the rest of the District, but instead I’ve gotten sucked into watching yet another House marathon. It seems that every Sunday night for the past, oh, twelve Sundays, I’ve been glued to the teevee watching the delightful drama of Gregory House and crew. It’s weird, because I’ve never watched an entire season or enough shows in a row to get in tune with the relationships between all the characters, but it’s such an addicting show that it really doesn’t matter. (And I’ve watched enough to gather that Cameron and House almost had a thing, or maybe they did have a thing? Where are those episodes?!)

Because I’ve been watching so much House, it’s always a huge shock to me when I’m reminded that Hugh Laurie is English. I mean, who knew he really sounded like this?

So much more likable! I wonder if he gets really, really sick of faking the American accent of a very angry dude. 

In other news, there’s um, some pretty exciting stuff happening this week. I’m not nearly as excited as I feel like I should be, except for random moments of joy where I’m all “Oh my god…next week at this time George Bush will no longer be our President.” Won’t you just feel calmer and happier knowing that he’s out of the picture? I know I will.

I’m one of those poor, common DC residents who doesn’t have tickets to any fancy balls and who doesn’t get to be close enough to the actual inauguration ceremony to ask Malia and Sasha if they want me to be their new babysitter. But still, I’m really freaking glad to be in DC right now. The sheer fact that we all get Tuesday off is exciting; it’s like we get a snow day and the rest of the country doesn’t. (Suckaaas.)

Of course, we do have to deal with the four bajillion people who are apparently coming for the Big Day. I’m a leetle nervous for that. As of now, my inaugural plans are to attend a cheesy Obama-themed party tomorrow night (think Barackli and Cheese and Sloppy Joe Bidens) and then brave the crowds with the rest of the world tomorrow. I’m still crossing my fingers that a front row ticket will turn up and I’ll get to hold Michelle’s mom’s hand throughout the ceremony. I’ll keep you posted.

In other other news, I get to see Joshua Radin in concert in NYC on Friday! So if things this week aren’t exciting as I want them to be, I can always try to get Joshua to fall in love with me this weekend. 

Sometimes my friends tell me I’m delusional. Sometimes I think they’re right.
