meet henry allingham, world’s oldest man.

Here he is, looking adorable and drinking a glass of the bubbly on his 113th birthday!

Henry Allingham turned 113 earlier this month, clinching the Guinness World Records title of World’s Oldest Man.  The picture is of him on his 113th birthday, celebrating with a bit of the bubbly.  Mr. Allingham, who has lived in three centuries, is also one of two surviving veterans of  World War I left in the UK.  Click here to read about his amazing life.  I like this quote:

His experiences, and the sights he saw at the third Battle of Ypres, ensured that his youthful enthusiasm was replaced by an undying passion for peace. “War’s stupid,” he told the BBC. “Nobody wins. You might as well talk first, you have to talk last anyway.”

After finding out he was the World’s Oldest Man, his caretakers said he returned to bed after breakfast.

Awww.  When I’m that age, I’ll go back to bed after breakfast too.  While he is not the oldest person to ever live, he is surely something special.  Here’s to 114, Henry!  Cheers!

youtube clip of today: hey jude.

If you want to feel happy, just watch this video.

Watch 13,500 people in Trafalgar Square, all singing Hey Jude.  PINK, by the way, is leading them in song.  Honestly, why does this have to be a viral video for T-Mobile?  Why can’t stuff like this just happen all the time?  Life would be so much more fun.

mal’s hippie quote of the day.

Peace love and hippies, man

As I’ve mentioned, I’m on vacation with my family up in the mountains. We’ve had a lot of time for lounging around on the gorgeous back porch, which overlooks the mountains, and while lounging I’ll read almost anything. That includes The Oprah Magazine. Yeah yeah, I know. But I’ve actually read a lot of interesting things that I want to share with you! The first is the following excerpt from a poem called “Sweet Darkness,” by David Whyte:

You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.

Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn

anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.

Great, right? (Read the rest of the poem here, and please ignore the terrible Comic Sans font.)
