tribute: to uncle kevin, yankee stadium.

Though I generally just support all Denver sports, I would consider myself to be a Yankee fan. It’s in my genes. My dad has always been a big Yankee fan (I’m actually not sure why, considering he was born and raised in Denver), and my mom’s whole side of the family is from New York. In fact, my mom and her four brothers grew up in the Bronx, not too far from Yankee Stadium. My mom’s youngest brother, my Uncle Kevin, is a die hard Yankee fan, and he truly appreciates the rare times he actually gets to go to a game in person.

My sister and I went to visit my Uncle Kevin about ten years ago, and he was determined that we experience a game at Yankee Stadium. I remember getting there, buying some souvenirs, and being introduced to what my uncle said was a quintessential New York baseball food: a soft pretzel with mustard on the side. (I still love pretzels dipped in mustard.) Then, to our disappointment — but much more so to my uncle’s — the game was rained out, and we didn’t get to see a single pitch.

Now that this is the last year the Yanks will play at their beloved old stadium, I’ll probably never get to see a game there. Still, I’m glad that I got pretty darn close, with someone whose passion for the game did the experience justice.

a little something for your weekend.

Unfortunately, I won’t be blogging much this weekend. But to get you through, I have compiled a list of links that I most likely would have blogged about or find interesting enough to share, and you’ll have to use your imagination to think of what Mal and/or I would say about them.

This story about siblings torn apart by the Holocaust and being reunited after 66 years made me cry more than watching the video of Christian the Lion. No jokes and nothing snarky to say–there is good in this world.

Here is an interesting piece on Wall-E. The first negative thing I’ve read and it brings up some valid points. Still haven’t seen the movie though. What do you think?

People are over medicated, and our dogs are next. Here is a piece from the NYT Magazine. Since I’m not going to, make all the jokes you want. Make me proud.

There’s going to be a DC version of “The Hills”. I’m pissed, because I wanted to be in it. My idea for a show title was just “The Hill”. Clever, I know. Ha. Shockingly, they went for more party oriented than political party oriented girls…

I love baby names, and I might give someone a candy bar or something to let me name their child. But give up a gas card? HELL NO. Have you seen the price of gas? This story is so wrong on so many levels. I LOVE IT. These people are nutso. Maybe I should do something like this. I bet I could come up with something better than Sunday Rose. Ugh.

And finally, a slideshow of supermodels then and now. Claudia Schiffer is still pretty hot. And girl don’t even get me started on Tyra.

Dunzo. Enjoy. Comment. Have adventures. Miss me. XOXO.

moms plus email equals great fun.

Cool Mom

Boys and girls, I may have discovered my new favorite website: postcardsfromyomomma.com. The website allows people to upload actual emails from their mothers for our viewing pleasure. As the daughter of a momma who sends very interesting texts and emails, I can certainly appreciate this site. (She loves middle-school IM lingo like brb and lol and where r u.) And although my mother is extremely entertaining, it is Kelsey’s mother who sent the best momma text message known to man.

You know how moms write as if text messages, IMs, and emails are real letters? Well, Kelsey’s mom was sending a text to Kelsey’s brother and attempted to start it with a cordial “Dear Warren.” Unfortunately, predictive text got the best of her, and she accidentally sent the message early, so Warren received the following message, unprovoked, in all caps:

FEAR.

Excellent, no? Makes me laugh every time.

belated hump day cry face. sorry!

Well folks, because I’ve been stuck in the wilderness with no access to a computer for the past few days (or maybe just forgot to bring my laptop to the fully modern and wireless house my family rented in Breckenridge), I didn’t get a chance to post my beloved Hump Day Cry Face. To celebrate my family’s annual mountain vacation, I’ll put up a photo of the cousins (plus friends) doing the good ol’ CF two years ago when we were up in Vail:

Yeah, you totally wish you were related to me.

serena is on venus’ planet again.

It’s sports week at Six Words!

For those of you that have siblings, you know that there’s always a little competition. My brother and I compete on many levels, but it’s usually games like body spray wars (everyone loses because you smell disgusting) and who can tell the most outrageous stories (okay, he wins). Nothing we do or ever will do can come close to the competition between Venus and Serena Williams.

Today, Venus beat Serena in the singles finals at Wimbledon. That means they are number 1 and 2 in the world. Awesome. It is Venus’ fifth Wimbledon championship, but Serena has won two. These girls are wild. On top of being remarkable athletes, they both have degrees in fashion design. Williams sisters: 2. Kathleen: 0. Eeek.

Here is something I found to be interesting. Their mother, Oracene, was there to watch them play but their father, Richard, went home because he can’t handle seeing his daughters play each other. Um, okay. But if you’re going to raise the top two tennis players in the world, you should be used to it by now. Right? That just seemed a little strange to me.

On a side note, does anybody remember the movie Wimbledon? The very thought that a movie, starring Kirsten Dunst of all people, was about tennis and had her eventually winning Wimbledon is laughable. The movie was terrible, but upon some research, I learned that James McAvoy was in it! He’s everywhere (to me)! Let’s see how many posts I can reference him in before it gets too old.

McAvoy (rawr!) aside, I was trying to figure out which Williams sister I like best. I think I’m going to go with Venus, because she’s the oldest. And as an older sister myself, I know you must keep the younger sibs in check. Like maybe beating them at Wimbledon, showing them up in a cheesecake eating competition, or seeing who can hold on to the remote control longest.

Kirsten Dunst, neither an athlete nor a fashionista:
