youtube clip of today: susan boyle.

Today’s clip goes hand in hand with the SWTCTW cliche life lesson of the day (which I just started.  Right now.  And probably won’t continue tomorrow.): never judge a book by its cover.

Watch this video.  The whole thing.

UPDATED:  Here it is again if the first one doesn’t work.

cobain died 15 years ago today.

Today is the 15 year anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death.  Being too young, I missed out on the whole grunge thing– but being a pop culture junkie, I appreciate it.  Plus, who doesn’t love a good stick-it-to-the-man attitude?  Thanks for the music, Kurt.

come stand a little bit closer…

You should know, first of all, that I’m feeling much better today. It took some Kathleen mixed with some wine with a side of chips and salsa and Ben and Jerry’s and POOF, healed. (Well, mentally. The ankle still causes me to go on angry expletive-laden rants in my head as I walk through Union Station: “God damned ankle. You mother fucker. Could you MAYBE stop HURTING you little piece of shit?!” Ahem.) Last night I may have eaten upwards of 200% of the recommended daily value of saturated fat in the form of Peanut Butter Cup ice cream, and Kathleen and I may have been glued to the television for an entire hour-long David Blaine special, straight out of 1997, with Leonardo DiCaprio and his floppy hair hosting. It happens.

I only overslept by a half hour (okay, 50 minutes) this morning, which was an upgrade from the rest of the week, and this morning this song came on my shuffle:

How could my day go badly if it began with that song? I mean…

Any time I need to see your face
I just close my eyes and I am taken
to a place where the crystal mind and
magenta feeling taken shelter in the base
of my spine sweet like a chicka cherry cola

The magenta feeling has definitely taken shelter in the base of my spine. (What?)

HAPPY FRIDAY, KIDDOS!

was it the cure? hope not!

I’m having one of those days. Not one of those days where everything is going terribly wrong, but one of those days where everything is mediocre: I woke up absurdly late today for no real reason. My ankle is still killing me, even though it is most definitely NOT broken or fractured. (I saw the x-rays, so I know that there’s nothing funky going on inside my foot…it’s just skinny little intact bones surrounded by swollen cankle flesh.) I don’t like what I’m wearing, and my shirt smells weird. My boots squeak when I walk. Everything I’ve eaten today has been boring. I have a test in class tonight, even though my professor has assured us that it’s not a test, just a “writing exercise.”

I sound like Debbie Downer-ish martyr, but I’m not actually that upset. I’m just feeling…blah. Feeling blah is almost worse than actually feeling like crap. When you feel like crap, or like crying, you can justifiably skip class or eat a pint of ice cream or watch dozens of old episodes of Arrested Development instead of writing your paper. But when you’re feeling blah, your conscience won’t let you get away with those things. (“Save the Chubby Hubby for when you really need it,” your conscience says.)

I’m not sure why I’m blogging about this. Kathleen and I certainly didn’t set out to be the kind of bloggers who tell you what they ate for breakfast and post pictures of their cats wearing Christmas sweaters, but I’ve somehow gotten into the habit of posting a lot about my life. In my defense, I don’t like cats, and I’m conveniently allergic to them, but you get the point. As my officemate would say, “Blergh.”

That was a fun litany of first-world problems, huh?! Let’s listen to my new favorite waiting-for-the-bus song and forget that any of this ever happened:

There. I feel better already.

we are breakable girls and boys.

Does it annoy you when I post music videos? Do you watch them? I always wonder that. I post them so often because (a) it’s easy, (b) I love lots and lots of songs and want everyone else to love them too, and (c) I genuinely enjoy learning about new music on other blogs. And I know, it’s not like I’m breaking artists that you’ve never heard of (faaar from it), but I like posting music because I can’t make my own music and sharing what’s already out there makes me happy. Fair?

If I start to get hate mail telling me to stop, I probably won’t, but the hate mail will make me sad. (I guess that’s the good thing about all of your readers being your friends, though…the hate mail is less frequent. And if there is hate mail, at least I know where the haters live.)

So um anyway, here’s another song I’m loving right now:

I’ve surprised myself by actually…almost…maybe kinda liking the fan video. It’s sweet, right? If you ignore the classic fan video literal images technique?

youtube clip of the day: airplane rap.

This is why I love Southwest!  Okay, is it just me, or would this be even better with the Fresh Prince music playing in the back?

My grandmother is actually the cutest person in the world and LOVES to watch the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on Nick at Night before she goes to bed.  She’ll inform us that she is watching “The Prince” and then retires to her room.  Haha.  Though recently she’s developed an addiction to Keith and Rachel, which conflicts with “The Prince”.  Such is life.

And now that the Fresh Prince theme song is stuck in your head for the next week, I should just help you out/make it worse:

Happy Tuesday!

enough about me, more about you.

I’m feeling ever-so-slightly like I might be getting sick, and I have eaten enough this weekend to feed a small country for a month, but instead of resting up for work tomorrow, I’m dicking around on my computer and listening to music. The other day I downloaded a bunch of self-pitying emo songs about being lonely, but in the iTunes frenzy I accidentally bought a really ridiculously adorable song:

Bonus points for the beginning of a beard.

perfection: jason segel plus paul rudd.

I know I’ve been posting a lot of YouTube videos lately, but I’ve also been watching a lot of YouTube videos lately. Apparently those things are related.

Try to watch this with out falling even more in love with Jason Segel and Paul Rudd:

I don’t care if you’re both married or way older than me or whatever. I want to have your babies and sing vampire songs and recite scenes from Clueless. Is that too much to ask?

turn it up, turn it up.

I am in a MAJOR Van Morrison phase right now. Which maybe sounds lame, like “Oh, hey, way to be a few decades late.” But whatever. Van Morrison is summer music for me, and so the second it was nice out, I was cranking that shit up. Maybe if I keep listening for the next few weeks, I can trick myself into thinking it’s not still see-your-breath weather. I’ll let you know how that works.

you went to school for what?!

the-beatles

I always hated when you’d ask someone what their degree was in and they’d say something like “procrastination” or “drinking”.  Oh, haha, good joke, you are HILARIOUS.  But imagine if you asked someone what they got their Master’s in and the response was “The Beatles”–and they weren’t making lame attempts at wit!  That’s awesome!  No seriously, you can get a Master’s Degree in “The Beatles, Popular Music and Society” at Liverpool Hope University in England.  Ummm.  Sign me up!

Here is the AP story:

LONDON — The city of Liverpool already has a Beatles museum and its airport is named after John Lennon. Now a local university says it rolling out a graduate program entirely devoted to the Fab Four.

Liverpool Hope University said Tuesday that its new master’s program, “The Beatles, Popular Music and Society,” would give students the opportunity to analyze music and culture through the band’s work.

“There have been over 8,000 books about the Beatles but there has never been serious academic study and that is what we are going to address,” said Mike Brocken, who is directing the program at the university, which is in the band’s hometown in northwestern England.

Brocken said students would be expected to study the Beatles’ songs, stardom, hometown and cultural impact through four 12-week courses and a dissertation.

Brocken said studying the band was really a way of examining society as a whole.

“If popular music is about anything, it’s about people,” he said. “If we look at popular culture, it simply provides us with a very complex mirror of ourselves.”

I think I just found the answer to the quarter life crisis.

Paul McCartney, no joke, was my first celebrity crush.  Of course, I was smitten with the young Paul McCartney.  I was also devasted when I realized the pictures were in black and white because they were taken 40 years earlier.  Wahhhhhh.

Imagine the classes you could take!  Please leave comments with your wittiest/best effort Beatles inspired class name.  (I won’t judge you as long as it’s not like “Drinking and Procrastinating to the Beatles!”  But–side story– I did, in fact, have a Beatles pregame once.  Or thrice.)
