today is a google holiday, hooray!

Sooo I’m sitting here on the couch of our Korean-in-looks-alone correspondent in the apartment that she shares with the worst guest blogger ever, Shannon Marie. We are eating all sorts of delicious foods and drinking red wine out of Christmas wine glasses at 5 p.m. because I’M IN CHICAGO, so why not? (And even though Chicago doesn’t get to host the 2016 Olympics, and even though it got kicked out first, and even though Bad Guest Blogger Shannon volunteered for the bid, it’s still a cool city, okay?)

But there’s another reason to celebrate: it’s a Google Holiday!

Today’s Google Holiday: Gandhi’s birthday! Today would have been Gandhi’s 140th birthday. Celebrate by being kind to your friends, flashing the peace sign often, and rocking a moustache, if you’re so inclined/capable.

What we were Googling: aaron carter lyrics saturday night

youtube clip of today: double down.

Rejoice, fatties!  KFC has truly outdone itself and I would even venture to say ALL fast food joints with their newest creation, the Double Down.  For some reason, it is only available in Nebraska and Rhode Island right now, so if you happen to reside in one of those states…ummm…lucky you?

I thought this was fake for two reasons.  First, because it’s just so absurd. Secondly, because it’s on Fox News.  But it’s real.  My, my, they do some serious reporting over there!

yum yum, it’s national cupcake day!

Cupcake

I don't know why I picked this picture. I actually HATE cats.

Leave it to Six Words to know that today is National Cupcake Day!

As a DC resident, I love a good yuppy, over-priced cupcake from a store that only makes cupcakes (Georgetown Cupcake, cough cough). I could write an ode to the cupcake, but it would probably end up with me talking about my thighs and then leaving work early to go to the gym a cupcake store.  Instead, I’m going to let the masters at one of my favorite blogs, Cake Wrecks, do their magic.  Click below for some hilarious pictures.

I hope you celebrate this very important day!

hump day cry face, super sized.

Guys, did you think I forgot the Hump Day Cry Face??? That could be because I almost did, but it’s only before midnight here in fair D.C., so there’s still time! And I’ve got a good one for you. Here’s the description this week’s Cry Facer sent along with her photo:

This gem was captured via iPhone in a McDonald’s I had to drive TWENTY min off the highway to because I was lost but NEEDED it.

There’s more to that story, but I’m a good friend and will keep that to myself. Onto the photo:

mouse cry face

She’s phenomenal, right? I planned to link to another photo of this fine lady doing another excellent CF, but turns out I haven’t posted it yet! I’m both ashamed of myself and thrilled that I have another gem to post, maybe next week. It’s like a double cheeseburger, but of CRY FACES.

[Update: Never mind, FOUND IT!]

In other news, I smashed my thumb rull hard with a hammer today while doing a little Bob Villa-ing around the apartment. Please join me in praying that my thumbnail doesn’t fall off.

oh, oh, the places you’ll go.

Soooo hey there strangers. In the past I’ve read a few blogs where the person writing said blog is all, “Oh my god, I am going to be so busy this month, look at my schedule,” and then proceeds to list everything they’re doing for the next four weeks. Which is, of course, the bloggy equivalent of an away message listing all of the papers you have to write. Which is, of course, REALLY irritating.

But people, I have been busy. And some people are good at being busy and still managing to do things like write on their blog and exercise and eat things that aren’t brownies, but it has become clear that I’m not that kind of person. Luckily, I’ve been good busy. As in, have gotten to go on several great trips to places I love and have done nothing about which I can complain. Still, the bloggy guilt has been weighing on me in a major way.

I mean, I got to spend a weekend here.

I mean, I got to spend a weekend here.

Most recently, I got back from a sorority reunion trip to Portland, Maine, where I went lobstering and cocktailed too much and ate too much and generally had too much fun. I got back to D.C. from that wonderful trip at 7:30 a.m. yesterday, and then I went back to my apartment and moved to a new apartment. And by moved I mean packed the rest of my stuff into trashbags and carried pillows while a sweaty Frenchman and a sweaty Bostonian carried my couch into their truck. Mmm, hiring movers. Then I packed another suitcase and now I’m in New Mexico for my very first grown-up business trip.

One of the perks of grown up business trips is that you get your own (!!!) hotel room. I am inordinately excited about this. It may only be a Holiday Inn Express, but I have my own teevee and my own bed and I can take over the whole sink AND I have free wireless. Did I also mention that I know no one in New Mexico, so at the end of the day I have no choice but to snuggle in my bed and blog? Yeah, that’s kind of nice too.

I’m not sure what the point of this post is, except to confess my guilt about the lack of blogging (three cheers for stubborn Catholic guilt!), and, in some way, to see in writing how cool the last month has been for me.

I often think about this concept: what if, ten years ago, someone gave you a snapshot or a brief video of a moment of your life right now? And you had no context and all you could see was what was going on right then and there, and wonder, “How on earth did I get there?” I had one of those moments tonight. I mean, I was sitting in a circle with a bunch of amazing people at least 15 years my senior in Albuquerque, New Mexico, passing around some sort of tribal object and talking about our hopes and aspirations for this workshop we were attending. What would 13-year-old Mallory have thought about that? I bet she’d be confused, and very, very curious.

Which is to say, you can’t imagine all the good things coming to you. You really can’t. (And yes, I did read that on the flap of a box of Sun-Maid raisins.)

the late friday afternoon grab bag.

tgif

The weekend is within our grasp, friends!  Here are some quick and things to look at before you go out for a raging Friday night and Mallory and I roadtrip to New Jersey for a conference with some of our bloggy correspondents (aka our best friends from college…minus a few.  You’ll be missed!)

  • Facebook is turning five years old, and we haven’t gotten tired of it yet.  Check out this piece (I may or may not know the journo behind it.) and DEFINITELY watch the video to see a 96-year-old man talk about the single most devastating factor to my college GPA.  Click HERE to read the story!
  • This is weird.  All 14-year-old Corby Cowart wanted to do was taste the rainbow.  His mother said yes, and he went to grab a bag of Skittles and he found a bag of cocaine in the Skittles box.  Yikes.  He said he knew what it was because he watches the TV show “COPS”.  Dammit, I HATE IT when stupid shows on the teevee actually teach kids stuff.  (Please refer to the story about Grayson Wynne)  According to Corby and his mama, the manager of the CVS laughed it off. Seriously?  The manager disputes the claim.  Of course.
  • Don’t copy that floppy!  A hilarious old video to prevent the young folk from copying computer games on the floppy disks.  Stunningly bad acting, floppy disks and a Fresh Prince style rapper?  Yup, welcome back to the 90s.
  • Katie Holmes made her much anticipated “So You Think You Can Dance” appearance last night.  BORING.  Honestly, all she did was walk around and occasionally twirl.  And the lip syncing was out of control.  Not impressed.

That’s all for now, Folks!

let’s eat cake like it’s 1969.

cake

We all have our favorite desserts.  Perhaps yours is the pumpkin pie your grandmother used to make at Thanksgiving, the cookies they used to have in your high school’s cafeteria, or just straight up Ben and Jerry’s.

Colonel Henry Moak LOVED the pound cake the Army rationed out during the Vietnam War.  After forty years of service to our country, Col. Moak is retiring and he wants pound cake at his celebration, which is being held today at the Pentagon.  To be specific, he wants Army C-ration pound cake.  Even more exact, he wants the one from one of his old ration kits he saved.  He’s planning to eat the old pound cake today… if he still can.

I am dying to know what happens.  Regardless, I know I’ll be a tad bit grossed out.  The thought of moldy pound cake is nasty, but then again so is the thought of perfectly intact cake 40 years later. Eek!

But let him eat cake.  And for his sake, I hope it’s still good.  He’s definitely earned it.

former competitive eaters are fat. unbelievable!

WEINER WARS

This just in from the Department Of Things That Are Unsurprising:  Ex-competitive speed eaters report weight gain, chest pain and clogged arteries.  Oh my!

CNN has a gripping piece on former competitive speed eaters.

“Any way you look at it, it’s not healthy,” Dave “Coondog” O’Karma, a retired competitive eater, said of his former hobby. “You do it once in a while, and it’s fun. I don’t think loading your body with fat and salt is healthy.”

After 35 years of gobbling hamburger, oysters, eggs, corn on the cob and even bull testicles, O’Karma listened to his family and retired from the competition.

Maybe his family was just upset that he gobbled bull testicles.  Moving on!

According to the article, the effects of speed eating hadn’t been tested before.  If I had to venture as to why, I think because everyone would know that it’s bad for you.  That’s common sense.  But someone just HAD to do a test on it.

n 2007, four University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine doctors who specialize in gastroenterology and radiology conducted an experiment on the stomach activities of a competitive eater and an average eater. The average eater ate seven hot dogs before he felt sick. Champion speed eater Tim Janus ate 36 hot dogs in 10 minutes before doctors intervened.

The doctors had to intervene!

If you want to watch people clog their arteries just for funsies, Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest airs tomorrow on ESPN.  Happy hot dog gobbling this weekend, folks!

a random and gratuitous elevator story.

This morning, two people on the elevator with me were discussing the overall strangeness of airport food, and the strange exceptions people tend to make for themselves when they eat in airports. “Ben and Jerry’s,” says one guy, “opens at 8 a.m. in such-and-such airport. 8 a.m.! And I saw people eating ice cream, at 8 a.m.!” Other guy, of course, is shocked: “People would never normally eat Ben and Jerry’s at 8 a.m.”

And I couldn’t help but wonder…what kinds of “people” do these guys know? B&J 4 LIFE.

Good morning, happy Wednesday, etc. etc.
