let the lady show some leg!

People want a White House that isn’t stuffy and a president they can have a beer with, yet when the first lady dresses like a normal woman on vacation, the media screams “totes inappropes, Meesh!” Or something to that effect.

As you probably already heard, some people are hassling my girl Michelle for wearing shorts and showing her stems as she stepped off Air Force One.  They call her shorts “short shorts” and “disrespectful” and BLAH BLAH BLAH.  This issue really resonates with your Six Words bloggers, as both of us have been blessed with long femurs.

These are the shorts in question:

Ummm… they look fine to me.  These are “short shorts”:

shortshortsNot the same, are they?

Our lovely and stylish First Lady is model height.  She’s 5’11. She’s going to have some lengthy gams.  So really, her shorts aren’t that short, her legs are just really long.  So lay off, you raging heightists!

Aren’t there bigger and better things to worry about anyway?  You know, like making sure the Republicans stop lying about health care reform.  Just a thought.

youtube clip of today: unusual entrance.

So today (technically yesterday, as it is now past midnight) was my birthday, and it was great. Relative to other recent birthdays of mine, “great” means “no major disasters occurred.” Let’s just say that my last two birthdays set the bar really, really low. But this year, I ate lots of yummy food and was reminded that I have lots of wonderful friends and family, and that’s what birthdays are for.

Then, as I was perusing my blogroll, I found this video:

It sort of made my already great day. I went from grinning to tearing up to outright weeping with joy by the end of the video. Guess 23 won’t be all that different from 22.

hiatus over, plus guest blogger intro!

Hello, long lost readers! I think that if I’m planning to be a serious blogger, I need to get better at letting you know when I’ll be on vacation and won’t be posting for a while, which was the case last week. I was in Denver for a few days, and then up in Vail with my extended family. There was lots of biking, cocktailing, eating, relaxing, and a little pong playing (we figured the best way to honor the three-year anniversary of my grandfather’s death was with a pong tournament, and thus the 1st Annual Toadie Memorial Pong Tournament was born. I think he’d have been proud). Basically, I got to look at views like this all week:

vail

You can understand why I didn’t want to be staring at a computer, eh?

I’m back now, though, and I’m ready to blog! It’s going to be a busy few weeks with at least three trips and one apartment move and one scary (23, ew) birthday, but I will be doing my best to keep up.

For today, I have a very important announcement: we are welcoming a new guest blogger, Miss Shannon Marie! (That’s not exactly her real name.) The best way to introduce Shannon is to say that she is my best friend from home, that we have caused a good amount of trouble together in various countries, and that we occasionally take pictures doing mature things like this:

You may also remember Shannon from a Cry Face post a while back. Let’s give Shannon a hearty SWTCTW welcome, and look out for her very first post in the next day or so!

youtube clip of today: roller babies.

I don’t know what it is about babies and animals talking or doing uncharacteristic things that makes them so successful in television commercials, but apparently it doesn’t get old.

This is the number one viral video on the interwebs right now.  Watch it, and then tell me why.  Pleeeeeeeease.

PS- Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile.

youtube clip of today: jersey girls.

Here is a Youtube gem!  Brought to my attention by our Seoul correspondent, it is sure to impress.  The clips come from a 1992 documentary about Wildwood, NJ.  Just watch.  You won’t be disappointed.

the oldest jonas brother gets engaged.

She looks like a brunette Ashley Tisdale. Right?

She looks like a brunette Ashley Tisdale. Right?

Kevin Jonas, the “Ike Hanson” of the Jonas Brothers, is engaged.  His fiancee is 22-year-old Danielle Deleasa.  The two met while their families were vacationing in the Bahamas, and according to People:

When Deleasa, a former hairdresser, first met Jonas two years ago, she admits, “I didn’t know who the Jonas Brothers were.” It was Kevin who eagerly pursued her after meeting her and then spotting her walking on the beach with a flower in her hair.

How romantic.  She is a former hairdresser?  I suppose her job now is being Kevin Jonas’ fiancee and fighting off tweens.

“She said yes, yes, yes like 500 times super fast in a row,” the oldest of the Jonas Brothers tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Oh. Emm. Gee.

Kevin Jonas is just 21.  At least he’ll be able to drink at his wedding?  Are there pregnancy whispers yet?

the girl who does not age.

I’m not going to comment a lot on this story because I really don’t even know what to say about it other than you MUST read this. It  is, by far, one of the craziest things I’ve ever read.  It seems like it should be science fiction.

Brooke Greenberg, age 16, does not age.  The doctors cannot figure out why.  She has been a toddler since she was a toddler.  Here is a picture of her, at age 16, being held by her younger sister.  Her sister is 13.

I think the Greenbergs are a wonderful example for all of us.  They have such an inspiring outlook on life.

grayson wynne is boy vs. wild.

I'm a fake!

I'm a fake!

Apparently shows like Discovery Channel’s “Man vs. Wild” have some value. When 9-year-old Grayson Wynne was separated from his family during a camping trip in Utah’s Ashley National Forest, he remembered the things he had seen Bear Grylls do. (That man, by the way, is the biggest fake. Not that the New York Post is gospel, but this article is worth a read: click here. Fancy resorts, Bear?  Seriously?)

Grayson ripped his yellow rain jacket in to strips and tied them to trees to leave a trail and clues. He spent the night in a small shelter he made under a fallen tree, and the next morning followed a creek in hopes of finding a lake. He was found on Sunday after surviving on his own for 18 hours. I’m impressed, little G! This story of boy vs. wild also has a warm and fuzzy ending. The first thing he said to his dad was “Happy Father’s Day”. Awwww.

jon and kate are officially dunzo.

jon_and_kate1236354668

At just 13 minutes in to the special announcement episode, watching Jon and Kate together is painful.

The kids are still incredibly adorable, as always. In this episode, they get Crooked Houses. I would have given up all of my American Girl dolls for one of these. They are amazing. I tried to go to the Web site, but I suppose everyone had that great idea. So it’s not working. Crooked Houses just got the Jon and Kate Plus 8 bump. Look at these, aren’t they just whimsically wonderful?

Kids-Crooked-HousesOddly enough, each kid was wearing one a Crooked House t-shirt. Can you believe that?! How convenient.

Okay, enough about the houses. That’s not what you care about anyway. After 35 minutes of saying how bad things are, they finally just said it. They are separating. They filed their divorce papers today. The interviews are really devastating, actually. Kate doesn’t want to be alone and she’s talking about how her children are going to be statistics with separated parents. Jon just seems lost. But the show must go on. The show will continue, but with Jon and Kate filming separate segments with the children.

No footage of them telling the children, but I think that’s for the best.

Will you keep watching? Is the charm gone?

meet henry allingham, world’s oldest man.

Here he is, looking adorable and drinking a glass of the bubbly on his 113th birthday!

Henry Allingham turned 113 earlier this month, clinching the Guinness World Records title of World’s Oldest Man.  The picture is of him on his 113th birthday, celebrating with a bit of the bubbly.  Mr. Allingham, who has lived in three centuries, is also one of two surviving veterans of  World War I left in the UK.  Click here to read about his amazing life.  I like this quote:

His experiences, and the sights he saw at the third Battle of Ypres, ensured that his youthful enthusiasm was replaced by an undying passion for peace. “War’s stupid,” he told the BBC. “Nobody wins. You might as well talk first, you have to talk last anyway.”

After finding out he was the World’s Oldest Man, his caretakers said he returned to bed after breakfast.

Awww.  When I’m that age, I’ll go back to bed after breakfast too.  While he is not the oldest person to ever live, he is surely something special.  Here’s to 114, Henry!  Cheers!
