fine, i’ll write about balloon boy.

balloon-boy

Ohhhh Colorado. My beloved, beloved Colorado. Why do you have to be in the news because of Balloon Boy? Why can’t we just talk about the pretty mountains and the lovely people and the funky neighborhoods? Balloon Boy (but mostly Balloon Boy’s parents), you SLAY ME.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, let me update you on the story (from memory, without sources, because I’m lazy): for one whole day everyone was terrified because they thought an adorable little boy whose family was on “Wife Swap” had floated away in a giant fake UFO. People spent all day staring at the Colorado sky and wondering, “Is this every kid’s dream, or every kid’s nightmare?” (My answer? Dream, assuming he lives.) Then the balloon/fake UFO landed near the Denver International Airport, and Balloon Boy wasn’t inside. Everyone was all “Ohhhh shit. Did he fall out?” But as it turns out, Balloon Boy didn’t fall out. Instead, he was hiding inside a box in the attic, because his dad was mad at him for playing with the giant fake UFO, or so they said. Then, in an interview, Balloon Boy provided a very suspicious response to the question of, “Why didn’t you come out of the box even when you heard people looking for you?” He answered: “You guys said that, um, we did this for the show.” (Okay, I swiped that quote from a NYT article. I’m such a legit journalist.) In the end, everyone realized that we were dealing with some bonafied crazies, and that the entire thing was a publicity hoax, allegedly because the family was making a bid for reality show stardom. Now we hate Balloon Boy’s family, because they toyed with our emotions.

Seriously, though. I think that’s why everyone is mad. The Heene family’s story elicited all sorts of real emotions from people across the country — from fear to excitement to sympathy, surely, for that little boy (not least because his name is Falcon) — and then stomped all over them. The situation sort of mocked us: “GOTCHA GOOD, suckers! It was all a hoax!” No one wants their emotions messed with. One time, Korean Correspondent Walshy (who is currently hanging out in my apartment while I’m at work, courtesy of a cancelled flight from our beloved United Airlines) told me that she didn’t get into the study abroad program that she wanted, and I felt awful and comforted her and then she was all, “BAHAHA, kidding! I got in!” I’ve still never forgiven her.

The point is, we Americans don’t like to be tricked. And that the punishment for tricking us might be felony charges. Lesson learned!

yours to decide, cute or creepy?

disneySorry that I have been “the worst guest blogger ever” to directly quote Mallory.  I recently got back from a fantastic trip to Ireland and London with my Mom, and then we had a long-femurred visitor a few weekends ago.  I know, poor me.

All excuses aside, I wanted to share this youtube video to see how people felt about this marriage proposal.  So far, we’ve got 2 votes for creepy, 1 vote for cute (sorry, Caroline).

To me, it seems like the girl being proposed to in the video would vote creepy as well, but that’s just my observation.

Here it is:  Disneyland Musical Marriage Proposal

i’m back again. not joking. really.

isowwyibe128596658335058668

Hi, remember me?  Yeah, it’s been awhile.  Sowwy.

Lots of things have contributed to my lack of posting (turns out I had swine flu!), but no need to dwell on the past (oink, oink).  To the future!

There have been SO MANY THINGS I have wanted to post about, and my wonderful friends continue to send me quirky things on the interwebs that they know I will adore– like this video from my friend Laura.  I think I’ve watched it five times.

AMAZING.

Or this Web site, www.peopleofwalmart.com, which has been sent to me by faithful readers Miguel and Civil War Dave.

These times are crazier than ever.  Jon and Kate do nothing but fight, Fox News’ Shep Smith is starting to sound like a socialist fascist communist Democrat, the Republicans are threatening to teabag the American people and Jessica Simpson’s dog was eaten by a coyote!  Yikes! Those are clearly the most important things going on in the world today.

And as if life in general wasn’t dangerous enough, Alexander McQueen has decided to introduce TEN INCH high heels to the world:

Grosssssss.  I don’t know, but something about them reminds me of giraffe hooves (I’m a nature girl), which is oddly appropriate.  There are more, you can see them here.

But hey, at least one thing is right in this world.  Jim and Pam are getting hitched tonight! RAWR!

today is a google holiday, hooray!

Picture 1

Today’s Google Holiday: Um, crop circles? National Geographic has no explanation for this, so neither do I. Ohmygod guys it’s a mystery, JUST LIKE REAL CROP CIRCLES.

What I was Googling: Technically, nothing. I was busy all day and of course was Googling things because how else do people find things, and the Google Holiday was TAUNTING me, but I had no time to post. Here I am, though! Here to tell you that I have no idea what this Holiday means. Google why you gotta be so mysterious?

INSTANT UPDATE: Christian Science Monitor has more ideas. Maybe this is a teaser for something Google is launching soon? Maybe it’s related to that new Dan Brown book? I bet Patrick Swayze could have explained it to us.

heidi montag (pratt?) pretends to sing.

I know you were dying to see this video.  Heidi Montag “performed” her “hot new single” at last night’s Miss Universe pageant.  Let’s take a look, shall we?

Oh goodness.

Something is very wrong with those pants.

Something is very wrong with those pants.

Notice how all of her dancers are brunettes?  Strange.

Well, let’s get one thing out of the way– there is no way in all of God’s green goodness that girl is singing unless there is a synthesizer actually implanted in her throat.  Her dancing is on par with Julia Stiles in “Save the Last Dance”, so mediocre at best.  And the costume?  Yikes, girl.  Britney already did the nude colored body suit thing, and it actually fit her properly.

Those silly Pratts.  Spencer thinks he can rap, she thinks she can sing and dance.  What next?!

I actually watched a solid five minutes of the Miss Universe pageant, and oddly enough it didn’t include Heidi’s performance.  I got to see the top 15 in the evening gown segment, which also featured a ten second clip of why each girl loved her dress.  Simple and elegant were the key words the girls used, yet none of the dresses were simple or elegant.  Meh.  Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Miss Venezuela won.

youtube clip of today: double down.

Rejoice, fatties!  KFC has truly outdone itself and I would even venture to say ALL fast food joints with their newest creation, the Double Down.  For some reason, it is only available in Nebraska and Rhode Island right now, so if you happen to reside in one of those states…ummm…lucky you?

I thought this was fake for two reasons.  First, because it’s just so absurd. Secondly, because it’s on Fox News.  But it’s real.  My, my, they do some serious reporting over there!

no pink or blue for pop.

gender

A couple in Sweden have decided to raise their child genderless, or in my opinion, screw up their perfectly healthy child.  The couple won’t answer any gender questions pertaining to their two-year-old son or daughter, who the media is calling “Pop.”

The idea behind the genderless upbringing is that the child won’t grow up with preconceived notions of gender and won’t be pigeon-holed into acting like a boy or a girl.

I’m sorry, but there is NOTHING WRONG with having a gender. The parents are creating gender issues where there probably weren’t any in the first place.

As a parent, why would you want to do anything that might encourage this type of identity crisis and bring about certain ridicule from peers on your own child?  Isn’t adolescence difficult enough already?  The parents claim that Pop will be able to choose his/her own gender whenever he/she feels it is the right time.  Pop, for your own sake, I hope it’s soon.

Read for yourself over at The Local.

study proves gamer stereotypes are true.

This just in from the Department of Things that are Unsurprising:  A new survey shows that the average U.S. gamer is overweight, 35 years old and depressed.

This study was conducted by the CDC in the Seattle-Tacoma area.  CDC’s Dr. James B. Weaver said,

“Health risk factors, specifically a higher BMI and a larger number of poor mental-health days, differentiated adult video-game players from non-gamers,” he said. “Video game players also reported lower extraversion [sic], consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status.”

Does anyone else find this to be really disturbing?

Last weekend I was in Indianapolis for a wedding, which fell on the same weekend as Gen Con Indy– a gaming convention.  Walking around, our high heels and party dresses were a stark contrast to the sea of gamer costumes: elves, pirates, warrior princesses.  Not to go all Carrie from Sex and the City on you, but I couldn’t help but wonder–besides the costumes, what is it about gamers that really sets them apart from the rest of us?

While we non-gamers are surely not to blame for the natural chemical imbalances that lead to depression, what is our role in ostracizing gamers from mainstream society?

Perhaps we lack the imaginative spark they manage to hold on to, and we mock them for it.  That being said, there must be another outlet for imagination and creativity besides a video game.

We all understand what it’s like to feel comfortable in a community of like-minded people.  (My comfort zone is other political wonks and campaigners who, to some, may seem like weirdos. Unlike gamers, however, we tend to be painfully extroverted.  It takes a certain kind of person to actually like knocking on doors and talking to strangers.) And if the study had said the average gamers were mostly happy and healthy, I would say “live and let live” and then make a crack about how they probably still live in their parents’ basement.

But that isn’t the case.  We now have data pinpointing a distinct community of people who are depressed and unhealthy.  Now we just need to figure out what to do and how to reach them.
