golden globe nominations came out today!

Sorry for the hiatus ladies and gents.  I actually started a new job this week (yay!) so thats the reason for my absence.

My absolute favorite season is coming up and it’s not Christmas.  The awards season is upon us!  The Golden Globe nominations came out today and the Awards are on Sunday, January 17.  Soon after, we’ll see who’s up for the Oscars (on March 7, fyi).

I personally love the Golden Globes for a few reasons.  First off, the Golden Globes are wayyy more laid-back that the Oscars, i.e., comedies and musicals actually have a shot to win (mostly because they have their own separate category).   Secondly, tv shows are awarded too and the variety tends to be better.  Lastly (and most importantly) booze is served!  Who doesn’t love watching trashed stars act completely inappropriately in formal wear?

I’ll let you read through most of the nominee list yourself, but my boy George and crew got the most nods for “Up in the Air.”  Here’s the trailer if you’re living under a rock and haven’t seen it yet.

I can’t remember the last time I was so excited for so many movies that come out around the holidays.  It’s Complicated, The Blind Side, Precious, Invictus,  and Nine, they all look so good.  Except Avatar, which I can’t take seriously in ANY way.  Also,  it’s not Titanic 2..so THAT’S disappointing.

James Cameron, make this movie, I DARE YOU!

happy thanksgiving, all you little turkeys!

Thanksgiving is upon us yet again, and I’m currently at work hoping that we will soon get an email saying “LEAVE. NOW. EVERYONE. GOBBLE GOBBLE.” So far, no luck.

I was taking a look at my Thanksgiving post from last year, and I must say: not a whole lot has changed. I’m still thankful for all of that good stuff (like goat cheese and Michael Franti and not being pregnant). Yesterday in my Pilates class, while we were doing a move called “the teaser,” the instructor asked us to think only of things we were thankful for. No bad thoughts like “hot DAMN this is hard!” I thought that was kind of sweet.

This year I’ll be spending Thanksgiving here in DC with Kelsey and a couple other lovely people, and we are forgoing the traditional feast-and-family route in favor of Korean spas and fancy dinners. I’ll let you know how that goes.

While we’re at it, I’ve gotta confess: World, I am thankful for Jason Segel. Even though I’m very NOT thankful that he pulled this stunt at the Swell Season concert in LA rather than the one in DC. Asshole.

Eat lots of delicious things tomorrow, and be happy about all you’ve got going for you. Gobble gobble!

the flyest kid on the block.

On my walk to the metro this morning, I spotted a tall, slighty scruffy-faced boy wearing low-top Chucks with nice work pants and pulling it off. I decided right then and there that I wanted to marry him, so I gave him a good stare, just so he knew. Then — in my head, obviously — I had a conversation with him about what music we were both listening to. Do you ever do that? Imagine someone striking up a conversation about what you’re listening to? I do it a lot, and my hypothetical level of coolness fluctuates wildly from day to day. Some days I’m all “Ooh, I HOPE someone asks me today so I can tell them I’m listening to Cloud Cult, which means I’m alternative and cool.” Other days, I think I should probably be ready to scroll back a few songs in case someone pops the question. “Taylor Swift, haha, silly iTunes Shuffle. What was before that? Oh, Coldplay, um, and before that? ‘Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)’? Where did that come from??*” And then I’d awkwardly laugh and walk away.

Not that anyone’s ever actually stopped and asked me what I’m listening to. Sigh.

In other news, on Monday I went out to happy hour and realized that I left my ID at work. The waiter was being strict but luckily, I only lived two blocks away and was able to run home (bitterly, of course) to get my passport. This morning I found my ID buried in the pocket in my wallet where it’s supposed to be, juuust deep enough that it looked like the pocket was empty. Son of a bitch.

Also. You know how when you were little, you were told that if you put the plastic rings that hold pop cans (or “soda” cans, as the kids say) together directly into the trash/recycle bin, the dolphins would strangle themselves in the holes and die? Is that true? Because I totally still cut every individual hole and think about all the dolphins I’m saving.

*I’m kidding here, of course. If I ever found a man who loved “Aaron’s Party” as much as I do, I’d propose on the spot.

happy little beards, haaaappy little beards.

Read this. Just do it. It’s about Kevin Gillespie/David the Gnome/Beardo (obviously).

If you don’t have a Halloween costume yet, dressing up as Kevin could be fun. Although finding fake beards online is a LOT harder than you’d think. I’m being Bob Ross, so I know these things.

Thanks for the tip about Kevin, Lanster, and hey, everyone? Have a haaappy little Halloween, a happy little day.

kevin gillespie, you are my hero.

He’s Beardo to the Gawker live bloggers, David the Gnome to my roommate, and number one in my heart. (Yeah, I totally went there.) Ladies and gentlemen, let’s all take a few moments to appreciate the snuggly wonder that is Kevin from Top Chef:

kevin-gillespie-top-chef

Um hi ginger beard.

But he’s not just snuggly! He’s tough too!

kevin

Just kidding! Still snuggly! Kevin, c’mere and give me a hug!

Seriously, though. I love Kevin. This is a weird season of Top Chef (as in four people are awesome and the rest suck and it’s just matter of time before the show gets to where we all knew it was going from Day One), and Kevin is the only one who consistently delivers and makes me happy (it’s like Blair on Gossip Girl, always making up for the other characters). Jennifer is painfully insecure about her cooking; Hipster Douche lives with his parents and is just plain irritating; something’s off about Robin; Douche Brother needs to learn to talk with his chin up and stop being a sore loser; Nice Brother is blah; and Jersey Douche makes me embarrassed to have liked his restaurant. But Kevin is perfect.

Speaking of perfect, hey Natalie Portman? Wanna be friends? Yer funny.

youtube clip of today: fun theory.

Oh huzzah, huzzah!  It’s Friday!  My heart is singing because I have been dreaming about sweatpants all day long and I can now see a light at the end of the long 9-5 tunnel.  But that has nothing to do with today’s YouTube clip of the day.  Silly me.

I love this video.  This should be unsurprising because I genuinely wish that my life was a lighthearted musical.  Things like flash mob dances and giant sing-alongs give me hope.  Sigh.  Anyway, I think these people are on to something.  There are two more videos from The Fun Theory, which is run by Volkswagen.  Das most clever!

Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

i want to be an obama!

Today the White House released the official portrait of the First Family taken by Annie Leibovitz.  My first thoughts were “My GOD what a beautiful family” and “Where should I photoshop myself in?”  Creepy?  Yes.  True?  …Yes.

And First Dog Bo wasn’t left out of the action.  In fact, Bo had his own set of White House portraits done, although Annie Leibovitz didn’t stick around to take those photos.  Malia and Sasha didn’t even get that honor.

No, this isn't the official White House portrait. I just like it a lot.

how chris cillizza fixed my day.

So I had one of those days. Well, not really one of those days. Just one of those afternoons. I had a great morning, and then I left my apartment. It was MISERABLE weather in DC today, rainy and gross lie-in-your-bed weather, and my umbrella recently broke. If I were a rational human being, I would have bought an umbrella at the CVS that is literally across the street from my apartment, but I have a problem with boring umbrellas. I hate rain, so when it rains I want to at least have a cute umbrella to make things a little more bearable. This has led to me walking around in the rain umbrella-less for the past two weeks. I managed to get to campus and do some work without getting too wet or too angry about life in general, but then the computers were behaving badly. And then I needed a bagel. And when I went outside it was raining. And I had a frustrating phone call. And then I decided to walk to J.Crew to buy a cute umbrella. And then J.Crew had no umbrellas and I told them, “FINE, I’ll just go to GAP then!” And then my button (the essential middle button, mind you) popped off of my coat and I almost burst into tears. And then I paid $24 for a new (very cute) umbrella at Anthropologie, even through I know it will break, like, tomorrow, because it’s an umbrella from Antropologie. FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS, PEOPLE.

It was at this point in the day (circa 4:45 p.m.) that I thought maybe I should just call it a day, go back home, maybe pop some popcorn, and hide under my covers because my heat doesn’t seem to work yet. In a feat of exceptional courage, however, I pushed through. And I went to the event I was supposed to go to at 5:15, which was with Chris Cillizza from The Fix. (Feel free to give my title a high five for punniness now.) Guys? He is great.

I don't know the context of this picture, but I like it.

This is just a guess, but I don't think that's his real body.

As I watched him talk, I was like, “Hmm, I wonder if he’ll be my best friend.” He was smart and self-deprecating and had funky glasses and talked about his baby. I was obviously a goner. And he made an interesting point about the difference between voice and bias, which was interesting. As in, it’s one thing to call out Sarah Palin for objectively being an idiot (or, to use the example he gave, to commend her for rhetorically delivering a solid speech at the RNC), but quite another to condemn every Republican action simply because it’s a Republican action. In other words, there’s a difference between having an opinion and being partisan. Not that that’s what we do here at SWTCTW, but I appreciate his point. Mr. Fix also commiserated with me about the meanness of bloggy commenters (I obviously told him about the Great Monkey Debate of 2008), so that made me like him even more.

I think what I’m trying to say is that my day got better. Thanks, Chris Cillizza!

Big college reunion this weekend, which means our SWTCTW “correspondents” from all over the country will be flooding the District with inside jokes and obnoxious dance moves. Watch out, people.

sorry ladies, jim’s off the market.

jim_halpert2

I can hear hearts all over the world breaking.  John Krasinski, who plays the oh-so-lovable Jim Halpert on NBC’s The Office, is officially engaged to Emily Blunt.  The two have been secretly dating since November.

See for yourselves.  And here is one of my favorite Jim moments.

let the lady show some leg!

People want a White House that isn’t stuffy and a president they can have a beer with, yet when the first lady dresses like a normal woman on vacation, the media screams “totes inappropes, Meesh!” Or something to that effect.

As you probably already heard, some people are hassling my girl Michelle for wearing shorts and showing her stems as she stepped off Air Force One.  They call her shorts “short shorts” and “disrespectful” and BLAH BLAH BLAH.  This issue really resonates with your Six Words bloggers, as both of us have been blessed with long femurs.

These are the shorts in question:

michelleobamashortshorts

Ummm… they look fine to me.  These are “short shorts”:

shortshortsNot the same, are they?

Our lovely and stylish First Lady is model height.  She’s 5’11. She’s going to have some lengthy gams.  So really, her shorts aren’t that short, her legs are just really long.  So lay off, you raging heightists!

Aren’t there bigger and better things to worry about anyway?  You know, like making sure the Republicans stop lying about health care reform.  Just a thought.
