cigarette tax = healthier kids. any questions?

To all of those whining about the 62 cent raise on the cigarette tax and a whopping 40 cents for the cigar tax, which becomes effective on Wednesday, I have three words for you:  Get over it.

Why so harsh?  Because the money generated from the tax increase will go towards expanding children’s health care, known as the SCHIP bill and signed into law by President Obama in February.  Instead of just seven million uninsured children receiving health care from the government, SCHIP has now been expanded to cover 11 million children.

But, naturally, some people are pissed.  By some people I mean the tobacco companies who don’t give a you-know-what about you or your health and some really addicted smokers.

This gem of a quote came from NPR:

Customer Pat Collier of Zephyrhills, Fla., calls it a punitive tax aimed at smokers. “This is really just like the tea tax in the Revolution.”

Well…no.  Because when our early American heroes, the colonists, were taxed, the money went back to the evil King George.  This time around, Pat, the money will be used to help children.  CHILDREN.  POOR AND INNOCENT CHILDREN.  Think about it.  Good.  Now let’s move on.

Smokers, you know the deal.  The cancer sticks are bad for you, your lungs turn black and all that jazz.  Maybe you are too addicted to quit, but for Pete’s sake (and Pete, by the way, is a 4-year-old with no health insurance and a life threatening illness), don’t let your addiction get in the way of helping a kid out.  You chose to smoke, these kids did not choose to be uninsured.

It is a sad fact of life that prices go up all the time.  The price of milk, the price of a pack of gum, even the price of the wonderful treasures at the 99 cent store.  At least this time, when you pay those extra pennies, you’re doing something good.

SPL31030_003

More inspiration for you to quit smoking...

Or maybe, just maybe, this might encourage you to quit smoking, which, you know, would be AWFUL.  (But, of course, you quitting has nothing to do with why the tobacco companies are so upset.)  So Joe the Smoker and others quit.   Over time, the number of smoking-related illnesses and deaths decrease, which also decreases the amount of state and federal dollars used to care for these people when they are in the hospital.  The taxpayer wins!  Oh, and if you quit, you run less of a risk of gum disease (eww) and you won’t get that hideous smoker’s mouth with all the lines and wrinkles.

Here’s another scenario to convince you that this might just be a good thing:  Raising the tax on cigarettes will give health insurance to 10 million children.  Having insurance will enhance their quality of life.  Healthy kids go to school. (And like School House Rock tells us, “knowledge is power!”)  Healthy kids grow up to be healthy adults.  Healthy adults work.  The American workforce is the engine of our economy. Voila!  The economy thrives!

…And I’d like to thank the Nobel committee for awarding me this most prestigious award in Economics… just kidding because really, it’s not that big of a stretch.

I’m so fortunate that my parents never had to choose between taking me to the doctor or feeding me.  But there are so many children that are not as lucky as I was/am and until we have universal health care, we need to take care of the ones that need our help the most–  the very old and the very young.

where the wild things are trailer!

Did they seriously make “Where the Wild Things Are” into a movie? (Let me answer my own question: yes, they did.)   Are you okay with this?!  (I’m clearly struggling with it.)  What are your thoughts?  It seems kind of dark and twisty…

joe the plumber says he’s “horny”.

As much as I hate to contribute to it by writing about it, I’m always interested when Joe the Plumber manages to extend his 15 minutes of fame– even if only for a millisecond.  How on earth does he do it?!  Well this new JTP blip on the media screen is fairly hilarious.  Thank you WashPo’s The Sleuth for the important news!  Joe recently spoke at the Media Research Center’s “DisHonors Awards”.  I know you’re DYING to know what that is; it sounds gripping!  Apparently all the people who hate democracy get in one room to slam the liberal media.  Doesn’t that sound fun?  Umm…boooooooring.  So good old Joe the Plumber/Journalist gets up there to accept some bogus award about really sticking it to the socialists.  Naturally, the neocons are clapping for this pure paradigm.  He eloquently expresses his humble appreciation:

“God, all this love and everything in the room – I’m horny,” declared Joe, whose real name is Samuel Wurzelbacher.

And cue the chirping crickets.  Rawr?

When you get that special feeling, Joe, you should just go on home, slip into something more comfortable (but really, is there anything more comfortable than the JTP flannel shirt?  I don’t think so!), light some cheap smelling candles, pour yourself a fine glass of boxed wine and run a nice bubbly wubbly bubble bath for yourself.  But for the love of all things holy and sacred, DO NOT tell your sexually oppressed conservative friends how you feel!

I was going to go off on a HUGE multiple-paragraph tangent about the so-called liberal media but I’m going to keep this as short as possible…aka one paragraph.  Guess what, folks?  The liberal media smear is spin concocted to protect the Bush Administration and its followers from the press.  By turning the American people against the press, the news stories– which contained the truth — were seen as biased and became irrelevant.  But reporting on the horrors of war and unveiling the lies of the government is not liberal bias, it’s the job of the press.  Take Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann out of the equation now, please, because they have equal and opposite forces named O’Reilly and Hannity.  We’re talking about the journalists whose names you do not know.  There is an unspoken vow among journalists to bring the truth to the people– a sort of Hippocratic Oath, if you will.  Challenging and questioning a president, Congress, the government, or taking on the rest of the media?  That is their function in society.  If the media were so liberal, we would have had a Democratic president years ago.  Trust me.  I’m appalled that the liberal media excuse and tactic is still being used and people are still buying it.  (McCain lost.  Sarah Palin sucked.  Get over it.  It was their fault.)  Now that Obama is president, the press will do its job to report everything that goes on.  In fact, Obama seems to be losing the media fight when it comes to selling his economic plan, is he not?  Not so liberal afterall…And I’m spent!

Now back to the important stuff.  A most appropriate music video in honor of JTP:

And one last uber-serious thought:  Has Akon ever sang about something other than sexytime?

you were perfection in parent trap.

As you’ve no doubt heard, Natasha Richardson — famous to lame children of the ’90s like me for her role in the Lindsay Lohan remake of The Parent Trap — died yesterday. I’m not sure why this is affecting me so much, but I am deeply sad about this. I originally heard that she was in serious condition, and then I freaked out yesterday afternoon when I read that she was brain dead, and then I almost cried on the bus when I got a News Alert that she had died.

The papers say that she died in a skiing accident, which makes me imagine her recklessly flying through trees or skiing out-of-bounds on some intense moguls. But what really happened is so much sadder. According to the NYT:

Ms. Richardson, who was not wearing a helmet, had fallen during a beginner’s skiing lesson, a resort spokeswoman, Lyne Lortie, said Tuesday. “It was a normal fall; she didn’t hit anyone or anything,” Ms. Lortie said. “She didn’t show any signs of injury. She was talking and she seemed all right.”

Can you imagine? She was taking a beginner’s ski lesson, and she was okay at first. Stuff like that kills me.

I think I’m sad about this for two major reasons. First of all, she seems like good people. She came from a long line of famous theater folk (even I’ve heard of the Redgraves) and was really well-respected in the theater community. And she’s married to Liam Neeson, who also seems like good people. They were so freaking cute:

I keep imaging the funeral scene from Love Actually, where Neeson’s character gives a eulogy that makes me sob every time and then sends his wife off, at her request, “through the immortal genius of the Bay City Rollers.” It’s life imitating art in the worst way.

The second reason this upsets me so much is that it disrupts the notion that freak accidents don’t happen people you know. When Heath Ledger died, it scared me because he was basically the first celebrity of my generation to die of a drug overdose. When our family friend’s infant child dies of SIDS, it showed me that these things are real. I of course didn’t actually know Natasha Richardson (or Heath Ledger), but somehow their deaths hit close to home.

Anyway. I’m very sad, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Natasha’s family.

the white house goes shamrock green!

White House fountains run green for St Patrick's Day at Michelle Obama's request

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!  I’d say something cool and witty in Gaelic, but guess what, I’m too lazy to look it up!  Anyway, St. Patrick’s Day is being celebrated at the White House this year Obama style.  Meeeesh had them dye all the fountain water green!  Love her.

And now, perhaps for the first time ever, a SWTCTW repost.  Dearest Madeline found this gem and posted it awhile back, but I think today’s as great a day as any to show it again.  I present to you the song “There’s No One As Irish As Barack Obama”!

It’s no “Danny Boy”, but I think I love it.  Have a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day!  Do something Irishy!  Drink something Guinnessy!  Get lucky…in the Irish sort of way.

PS- Found this article to make us all sophisticated while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.  (It’ll tell you what Erin Go Bragh actually means, so maybe you should check it out.)

when our work’s done for us.

Here is a story from the NYT:

For Young President, Flecks of Gray

Naturally, I think B looks fantastic.  While the article makes it seem like it wasn’t necessarily a campaign decision to let him go gray, I think it was.  Every detail of that campaign was discussed and analyzed.  They wanted him to have a more experienced look, and it works for him.

Who is this Walt Frazier “No Play for Mr. Gray” joker anyway?  Pssh.  B is still foxy.

In case you hadn’t heard, your favorite libtard crook politican is writing a book!

Thank you, Chicagoist (via Wonkette, obviously) for this gem:

blago's book

I’m counting darkside as one word, which makes this a phenomenal six-word memoir (literally! ba-dum ching!).

Blago, I hope your memoir is exactly as successful as Joe the Plumber’s “book.”

happy square root day, you nerds.

Oh sweet celebration!  Happy Square Root Day, ya’ll!  Today (incase you forgot) is 03/03/09, so mathematically…√9 = 3, or 3² = 3 × 3 = 9.   Stop judging me, I did not come up with this and I had to copy and paste the math from my source.  I just like to keep you informed.  Here’s what the mathematical mastermind, Ron Gordon, has to say about Square Root Day:

“Square Root Days are special because they’re so rare,” he said, with enthusiasm to the nth degree. “We only get a handful of them in a century. The last one was Feb. 2, 2004, and the next won’t be until April 4, 2016. They’re like calendar comets. You wait and wait and wait for them, they brighten up your day and then — poof! They’re gone.”

Nothing significant will actually happen on this day, as far as we know.

Luck is not associated with Square Root Day as it is with, say, a Friday the 13th (which we’ll have next week). The Rapture will not occur, and airplanes will not fall out of the sky like they didn’t on Y2K.

Now if you did the math and use your trusty TI-83 Plus, you could find out that Square Root Day only occurs sixteen times a century.  The next one? 04/04/16, duh.  And apparently you’re supposed to celebrate by cutting up root vegetables in the shape of square roots. Weird.

But in honor of all you math nerds and I suppose Square Root Day, I present to you this video of my favorite mathlete ever, the one and only Math Enthusiast/Bad-Ass MC, Kevin G.

my my, dr. seuss is 105!

dr-seuss-birthdayPerhaps some of you care, perhaps you’re just looking for another reason to party– an alcoholiday, if you will.  (I came up with that on Fat Tuesday, appropriately enough.  I’m sure someone else has thought of it before.  I’d never heard it.  I want credit.)  As if a snow day wasn’t enough of an excuse, I’m pleased to tell you that it’s Dr. Seuss’ birthday!  The king of the AABB rhyme scheme, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, would be 105 today.  I’m sure if he were here with us, the Great Birthday Bird would pay him a visit.  Heavens to Betsy!  You don’t know about the Great Birthday Bird?  Well, I’ll let the good Doctor do some explaining:

The Great Birthday Bird!  And, so far as I know, Katroo is the only place Birthday Birds grow.  This bird has a brain, he’s most beautifully brained with the brainiest bird-brain that’s ever been trained.  He was trained by the most splendid Club in this nation, the Katroo Happy Birthday Asso-see-eye-ation.  And, whether your name is Pete, Polly or Paul, when your birthday comes round, he’s in charge of it all.

So now you know!  Seuss-style rhetoric is the best.  You can read more Seuss quotes here.  Even though I get older, his books never get old.  Oh, and check Google.  Their page is really cute today.  Oh, and if you want to be RESPECTABLE and not use Dr Seuss’ birthday as an excuse to drink but still want to celebrate, you should, at the very least, make yourself some green eggs and ham.
