law and order makes us fat.

According to a recent study, I could place the blame on Law and Order and all 17 of its spin-offs for the fact that I eat a lot.  I’m not kidding.  Law and Order, and other crime shows, apparently makes us eat a lot.  I am an avid Law and Order fan–uh oh.

In the study, titled “The Sweet Escape,” researchers conducted four experiments revealing that “consumers who have been recently reminded of their own impending mortality” spend more on groceries — and actually eat more of those groceries.

Oooh, clever title.  Anyway, Law and Order and others are the catalysts for reminding us of our own impending mortality?  What?  Whatev.

“We found that when people think about the fact that they’re going to die someday — not now, but someday — they want to consume more of everything,” says Naomi Mandel, co-author of the study and an associate professor of marketing at Arizona State University. “We find this with snacks and drinks but also all kinds of different foods: frozen foods, meats, vegetables, everything.”

And they connect this to Law and Order.  I can’t believe they spent money on this study.  I have, in my opinion, a better theory to explain the connection between snacking and Law and Order.  None of this “impending death” mumbo jumbo.

Let’s look back to the experiments of scientist Ivan Pavlov.  He is known for his work with dogs, making them salivate at the sound of a bell.  Basically, it has to do with mental association.  He would ring a bell and give the dogs food.  Eventually, they would salivate at the sound of the bell with or without food present.

People like to snack when watching TV, right?  So swap out a bell for the signature Law and Order gavel DunDun noise and take away the food…voila!  We have been trained liked Pavlov’s dogs to feel hungry while watching Law and Order.  And being that Law and Order is on 22 out of the 24 hours in a day, this training does not take long to do.  Really, all it takes is one week of being sick and watching TV all day every day, or just a few weeks of watching one or two episodes a night.

That, my friends, is why we eat when we watch Law and Order.  That is why Law and Order makes us fat.

Just for fun, here is Sesame Street’s parody of Law and Order: SVU, Law and Order: Special Letters Unit.

Oh, and just because The Office is the BEST SHOW EVER and Jim is dreamy, dreamy, oh so steamy and smart, here is his Pavlov’s dogs trick on Dwight:

americans elect poodle to white house.

Well, not exactly.  But even if they did, a poodle would have more experience than Sarah Palin.  SNAP.

Here’s the real story.  Barack and Michelle promised precious Malia and Sasha that after the election they would get a puppy.  Aww!  So the American Kennel Club held an election–42,000 people voted–to see what breed should be the presidential pup.  And the poodle won.  Apparently the Obamas have allergies (just like my family!  Talk about identity politics…), so that helped narrow down the breeds to choose from.  I’ve been following this story for awhile, because the Chinese Crested Hairless was one of the options.  For those who know me or have read the blog before, I am the proud owner of a hairless dog.  My baby boy, Dr. Seuss, is perfect.  Look how cute Chinese Crested puppies are:

Yeah, you want one too.  PUT BARACK OBAMA AND A CHINESE CRESTED IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

Oh, and they didn’t hold an election for a pet for old Johnny.  This is because he and Cindy already have–I am not making this up–24 pets.  So that’s 3.4285714 pets per house?

copper has never gone this far.

Lana, one of our millions of New York correspondents, just sent along a very interesting article about a very hungry dog from North Carolina. Apachee, a b-e-a-utiful husky, had to be operated on this week because he had eaten a fork. Yup, a fork.

He had swallowed the fork a few days before the surgery. It sat there for a few days, then punctured a hole in his stomach and “traveled into his chest, penetrated his lung and lacerated his pulmonary artery.” Apachee almost died from internal bleeding and cardiac arrest, but luckily his vets were able to perform emergency surgery and save him. Phew! Copper, don’t get any ideas.

guess what copper ate this time?

My dog (pictured above, looking saucy) is definitely not a skinny bitch. Well, actually, he’s pretty damn skinny, but he’s not what you might call a “light eater.” For some time now, I’ve been meaning to start regularly posting about the random shit that Copper eats, because man, it’s impressive. In the past, he has eaten half of a huge nutella/white chocolate cake, a jar of honey, a bag of Chex Mix, brownies that were in a Tupperware, a can of Hansen’s soda, a bag of Snickers (wrappers included), a container of rat poison, etc. etc. As you can see, he’s not particularly discriminating in his culinary choices.

Today, Copper ate an entire loaf of banana bread. That we were giving to our friend who has cancer. NICE ONE, Copper.

youtube clip of today: pug bowling.

This is a great pranking your significant other/one-upping their jokes youtube video.  I mean, almost a million people have viewed it.  That’s pretty good payback. The best, by far, is the Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Kimmel battle with Matt and Ben. WHY OH WHY DID YOU ALL HAVE TO BREAK UP?! Think about the children! (Like me).

Anyway, while you are watching, just know that no animals were harmed in the making of this. I only have one complaint: it mentions MySpace. And you all know how much I abhor the MySpaces.

By the way, if I see my precious Dr. Seuss in a video similar to this in the slightest, I’m coming after you. You know who you are.

you are so beautiful, to me.

Gus, a Chinese Crested Hairless, won the illustrious and much coveted title of World’s Ugliest Dog on Sunday in Florida. He has three legs, one eye, and one hell of a personality. He apparently slept through most of the competition.

And I’m freaking out. Why? Because I have a Chinese Crested Hairless dog.

My beautiful boy, Dr. Seuss (because he looks like a Dr. Seuss book character, duh), is amazing. And not ugly! I swear! But ugly is what people think of when they know the breed. Most of the recent past winners of the competition have all been at least part Chinese Crested.

So sure, Gus and Dr. Seuss might not be the picturesque puppies you see in the Purina commercials. I cannot tell you how many times people have asked me if Seuss was on chemo. Chinese Cresteds’ conventional beauty is on the inside-just like many humans. Maybe it’s just me, but instead of mocking their lack of soft and fluffy, we should be taking a minute to acknowledge how unique they are and appreciate the fact that they make us laugh. Haha, okay, that might just be me.

Anyway, I just wanted to post the link to the slide show of the competitors this year so that you could have a good laugh. (I laughed out loud a lot.) It was a tough year! My favorite is Squiggy. He looks badass.

Also, here is Sam, a three-time champion of the competition. If he hadn’t died, I’m sure he’d still be the champion. I’m obviously sensitive about the way people treat the breed, but I can say that this is legitimately the ugliest dog ever.
