the pregnant man is pregnant. again!

Thomas Beatie, the transgendered man who made headlines earlier this year by simply being a pregnant man, has got a bun in the oven!  Congrats to Thomas, his wife, Nancy, and their baby girl, Susan!  Susan, the competition starts now, kid.  You have to be the perfect oldest child, just like the rest of us first borns!

There’s nothing snarky to say about this, nor should there be.  Everyone is entitled to happiness.  Read the story and watch Thomas’ interview with Barbara Walters here.

And here are some pictures:

It’s really quite remarkable, isn’t it?

it might be a quarter-life crisis.

Or maybe just a bold career move.  Either way, TMZ.com (the real “gotcha” journalists) is reporting that John Mayer will be hosting a weekly variety show on CBS, maybe as early as January 2009.

The show will be “a music, variety and sketch show in the ’60s mold,” according to TMZ.  I’m sure there were a few successful variety and sketch shows in the ’60s but my mind goes right to “The Brady Bunch Hour.”  Technically, that was a show of the 70s but that’s what I’m picturing and I just don’t know what to make of the thought of deliciously-jeans-and-teeshirted John Mayer in one of these outfits:

There’s no word yet from John Mayer’s people about a variety show but Johnny did have this to say on his blog (yes, he has a blog; yes, I read it sometimes; yes, it would have been much cooler if he was the mystery guest blogger):

Hi out there…
thought I’d check in to let you all know what’s up in my world…

I’m working on the next CD, which I’m sure you will immediately hate until you eventually love. I’m basing out of LA because I’m working on a side project that is extremely cool. (I’ll tell you about it soon.)

A side project that is extremely cool?  Is that singer/songwriter/celebrity blogger code for “musical variety show of the 60s mold?!”  Probably.  John Mayer’s a pretty funny dude and I certainly wouldn’t object to seeing more of him but I’m just not sure how I feel about this.  Then again, I have an aversion to most change.

What are your thoughts?  Can he pull it off?  Is it Rock ‘n’ Roll?  Will you watch?

While you debate, let’s take a trip back to where it all started:

watch me do the humpty hump.

BAHAHA remember that song?

Before I post the (yet again belated) Hump Day Cry Face, let’s all welcome our wonderful new bloggerette, Madeline! Hooray! It’s like we elected a new president, except that old president’s still around, and doesn’t suck.

It is raining a lot today which means I hate my life. Every time it rains my brain switches into “mmm let’s lie under the covers and watch lots of bad television and eat carbohydrates from a bag” mode. But instead, I had a “business meeting” and “lunch with a colleague.” Which mean I hung out with my friend and my boss looking at pictures of Cry Face and then had lunch with a family friend. Do you SEE how important my life is?

Anyway, as I was showing my friend and my boss some Cry Face photos, I stumbled across this gem:

crnks

Featured above are the father and youngest daughter of one the greatest, wackiest families in the universe. Doesn’t Frank, on the left, look as though he belongs in a nursing home?

now let’s see barack do riverdance.

Over the years I’ve been grateful to my Irish ancestors for many things; coming to America, skin so pale it’s see-through, an iron liver, Catholic guilt, etc.  So it’s not as if I needed another reason to be proud of my Irish heritage, but a little band called Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys wrote this little ditty to celebrate Barack Obama’s election to the highest post in all the land and it’s fabulous.  They’ve been invited to perform at an inaugural ball in January and are currently recording their newest single “When President Obama Comes Home to Moneygall.”

For those who may not remember, all the way back in month four of this now legendary 21-month long campaign, it was reported that some of Obama’s roots were planted in the small village of Moneygall, Ireland.  Moneygall, which has more pubs than traffic lights and a population of 298, was the home of the President Elect’s great-great-great grandfather Fulmuth Kearney, who left Ireland for the United States in 1850 at the age of 19.

According to the Irish Times, the little village has already welcomed the first Obama tourists and the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Brian Cowen has extended an invitation for Obama to visit Moneygall and have a pint.

With the job he has ahead of him, it can’t hurt Obama to have the luck of the Irish on his side.  So raise your pints because, faith and it’s a small world!, there’s no one as Irish as Barack Obama.

’cause down the shore everything’s alright.

ring-dance-picture2

Greetings, readers! It’s your favorite Jersey Shore-correspondent-turned-guest-blogger here, Madeline!  I’ll be filling in for Kathleen while she’s gallivanting around South America, living life in the adventurous way expected from twenty-somethings.  Personally, I defy those expectations by spending most of my free time watching the teevee with my dog.  How exciting for all of us.

Kathleen has left some pretty big flip-flops to fill but she assures me that I’m well prepared as I’m unemployed and still suffering from regular bouts of post-college depression.  Still, this is a big task so I’ll start off slowly and in the way most entertaining to me: by talking about myself!  So that we can all become better acquainted I’ll follow the SWTCTW tradition set by Mallory and Kathleen:

About Madeline

batman to sue batman. confusion ensues.

Holy identity theft, Batman!  The mayor of Batman, Turkey, Hüseyin Kalkan, is going to sue Christopher Nolan– director of The Dark Knight (Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeath! Wahhhh!).  The reason?  Over use of the name, Batman.  No, seriously?  Can someone please tell Mayor Kalkan that Batman has been around since the 1930s?  So suing the director of the most recent film…not that logical.  Thanks.  But whatever.  Could this story get any more absurd?

Kalkan also blames a series of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact suffered by the town after being placed under the spotlight by Nolan’s film. In addition, Batman expats living abroad have experienced legal issues when trying to use the name to set up businesses, he claims.

Yup. It just did.  You know, maybe the Turks should stop naming their cities after OUR superheroes.  Yes, I’m talking about you Wonderwoman, Turkey and Aquaman, Turkey.  I jest, I jest.

I think the real problem is that the city of Batman NEEDS a Batman to solve its problems.  Suing Batman is not the way to get on his good side, Mayor!  You’ll never get a Bat Signal.  Or, call me crazy here…but instead of suing a major movie studio that will probably win the case, you should put your city’s funds towards crime prevention…

What are your thoughts?

a big week for hairless dogs.

I was emailed not once, but twice, about hairless dogs yesterday.  That should say something.  Some sad news, some better news.  Why do you care about hairless dogs?  Because it’s weird, and they’re funny.  And I feel like writing about it.

Updates on the Obama puppy situation!  The nation of Peru has offered to send one of its national treasures, the Peruvian Hairless Dog to Malia and Sasha.  Pictured below is the little guy, named “Ears”.  If the Obama family accepts the gift, the dog’s official name will be Machu Picchu.  Haha.  I’m going to Peru fairly soon…anybody want me to bring one back?

So here’s the sad news.  The world’s ugliest dog, Gus, a Chinese Crested Hairless, died Monday at the age of 9.  All dogs go to heaven, Gus.  We’ll miss you little guy.  RIP.  He was so ugly, he was cute.

No word on the replacement for the prestigious world’s ugliest dog title.  But leave it to me to keep you updated.

I’m just spreading the love for hairless dogs to the rest of the world.  Just trying to end the discrimination against them and make this world a better place.  Hairless dogs are moving on up!  Soon all you haters will have them too!

the best holiday you’ve never celebrated.

Dear readers, happy holiday!

No, I’m not talking about the fact that it’s practically Christmas by retail standards, or even Veterans Day (although that is certainly a worthy holiday in itself). Rather, I am talking about November 11. As in 11/11. And the exact moment of the holiday takes place at 11:11:11 on 11/11. You know how some people tell you to make a wish when the clock says 3:33? This holiday is like that, on steroids.

Yeah, maybe it’s not very mature of me to celebrate such a thing. But everyone loves silly holidays. There are holidays for everything these days, so why not 11/11? My friend Katie and I “invented” the holiday back in 6th grade, and we’ve been celebrating ever since. Every 11/11 is a great day, but the biggest 11/11 of all is coming up in just a few years.

You guessed it: 11/11/11 at 11:11:11. It will be like midnight on New Year’s, only BETTER. I promise you that I will be hosting a large party for the event, and you are all invited. (It will be on a Friday night, and there’s no way you ALREADY have something better to do, so I’ll know you’re lying if you say you can’t come.)

It’s funny, because back in sixth grade, when we invented this holiday, it was 1997, and 2011 seemed a hell of a long way off. It was. Strange how that works out. I’m not in the mood to get into a deep discussion about how time flies and how your perspective is so different when you’re 11 (AH! I just realized that we invented the holiday when we were 11!), so I won’t.

Let’s just stick with Happy 11/11! Make it a good year.

i was starting to like her…

I was sort of starting to like Lindsay Lohan again. I obviously loved her in that Parent Trap remake and Mean Girls and the awkward movie about the living doll with Tyra Banks, but then she got all crazy and unlovable. But LiLo has recently been back with a guest spot on Ugly Betty. (I, by the way, love Ugly Betty. Daniel and Betty are so fucking cute and Amanda and Mark might be my favorite girl-plus-gay-guy couple ever.) Miss Lohan was actually pretty good in the few episodes she was in. Sure, you HATED her character by the end, but she seemed to sort of have a sense of humor about the role, down to some jokes about rehab.

And then Lindsay had to go on the teevee and do this (watch until about 21 seconds in, then go scream into a pillow):

Um, REALLY?

UPDATE: Reader B-lo made this point in the comments:

“I don’t know–it’s definitely garbled right when she allegedly said “colored”. Kinda sounds like a chop job to me. Why would that be the only word in the whole interview that isn’t completely clear?”

I listened to the clip a few times before posting it because I was skeptical, but I was pretty convinced that she said “colored.” What do you guys think?
